HMR in the wind?

Recommended Posts

I don’t think I’ve shot hmr 150 yards in wind, but I’d say the bullet drop is about what I’ve experienced at that distance with 110 yard zero. Scope height will have bearing as well Id think. I’ve had no problem shooting crows at that range and further. No mill dots but I can judge the drop out to as far as I shoot it anyway. Anyway, if I can’t judge an accurate shot with that scope I’m thinking it’s too far and don’t shoot.

It certainly wasn't my experience with hmr in the wind but then again i wasn't shooting from a bench rested position nor did i have a "Tooned" barrel.

I once went out at night with my son who wanted to try it and he is a decent shot to be fair. We where after rabbits but i had told him i don't want any body shot just head shots. The wind was fairly strong and gusting he eventually managed to shoot four but a lot of complete misses. His verdict at the end of the night was that" i should walk to the nearest pit and throw the useless piece of shit into it". I really couldn't disagree.

I wouldn’t even take mine out on a gusty day. It works ok for me on small vermin (mice etc) but mostly less than 100 yards. It’s handy as it’s got a 15” barrel so good from the truck. I wouldn’t get much for it if I sold it, so might as well keep it. It has its uses sometimes but I’ll take the hornet 9 times out of 10.

I sold mine because, it wasn’t that good in wind, and I shot loads with it, ammo supply was unpredictable, anyway I replaced it with a 22 hornet and never looked back I love the caliber,

It's not looking good is it ☹️

They’re alright for what they are. The thing is, I think some people expect centrefire performance from them and believe that they’re designed for long range shooting, because they’re relatively fast and flat(for a rimfire). They work pretty well for what they’re designed for, small pest species, where the frangible little bullet has good effect. For shooting squirrels on the ground out to 100 yards plus, where they’re pretty much point and shoot, I’ve had good results. That’s their forte really, but not reliable in the wind of course.

I've been out and shot the wmr in a gusting 12mph+/- to 200yds.

At 175 with hornady 30g v max I was wanting about 6"-8" windage. Aiming at small pebbles I was able to stay all around it hitting it once.

At 200 it needed 12" windage. I purely guessed the wind and hold shooting off sticks and was pleasantly surprised with the reliability of each shot. I shot off sticks standing. They offer little if no advantage to shooting off hand in my opinion.

So how does that compare with today wind?

Further testing today with the wmr in the wind tonight confirmed a couple of things for me.

Shooting a rimfire in good wind up to 200yds is folly. That's the first point.

The second is that my right eye is pants, infact, both are no where near what they were a decade ago. So spotting rabbits unless perfectly lit up is getting difficult for me.

So there is no point me getting a mouse rifle, I won't see them and when I squint through the glass with my right eye everything goes darker anyway!

The longest shot today was a woodie at about 140yd. The rabbits were 10yd to 80yd or there abouts. I'm getting somewhere with the sticks now. I have to spread my legs to to get a stable hold.

I'll stick to me wmr ta ?

^^^^ This really^^^^

I listened to and fell for the hype of the hmr and soon found it disappointing to say .the least.

I replaced it with a .17 Hornet and i believe that particular calibre is the rifle everyone thought the hmr was going to be and wasn't.

I have now parted with the Hornet due to it being awkward to load for and bought another .204 instead.

I have a requirement for something in between .22 rimfire and .204 but just haven't decided how best to fill it yet. I may go another .22 Hornet.

I agree, I only keep mine because it’s worth nowt?

"1" shot at each distance as in video is irrelevant.  It really tells us virtually nothing.

I have never seen my HMR as a Loooooooong distance rifle, it will deliver comfortably for me out to 100-120, but I have taken shots to 150-170 in the right situation.

I've actually tried it a 600 yards at Bisley, I eventually got it on the target but this was simply an exercise of course.

If I know I am looking at distance shooting the HMR is not one I would take out, but I still find it very useful and its definitely staying for me!
