i divorced in 95, have three children two boys 18,16 & a 15 year old girl. I love cooking, getting recipes out of books and online, but of late i have noticed a change and even i have been dragged into this way of life. My kids are now at the stage were they are out most of the time and i have spent ages cooking to find that they come in turn their noses up at the food or have already eaten out. I work long shiftsand have now got to the point that i think sod it. If i can go buy five microwave meals for four quid then so be it. I get to spend more time with the dogs and animals, can spend more time in the field with the gun or ferts or on the bank with a rod in me hands. After spending countless years slaving over a cooker, taking and picking up kids from school and after school clubs and what with work, keeping the house, diy and so on it does bog you down. For the first time in my life i seem to be getting a little time back to myself, albeit cutting a few corners then i will do it, and believe me it is still hard going at times. I find my kids are the laziest gits going, its even got to the stage now that i have removed the twenty odd cups from the cupboard otherwise when i get in from work in the morning i find everyone of them in the sink for me to wash up along with the cuttlery and plates. This might be going a little off topic here but i think that this is all part of the equation, they just take you for granted, and i'm not the only one as many other parents i speak are in the same predicament, life is fast and hard and its a dog eat dog world, a fast buck, quick turnaround etc, get with the program...ban this ban that, anti this anti that, it's sad times folk and things ain't going to get any better so whatever time i get to spend doing what i enjoy and love the most then i will do it ,if i have to cut corners then so be it

Too right kids are lazy, we as a society have taught them to be this way.

I have always been taught that charity should begin at home and yet in this country, thousand live in poverty because we let the Turks make our clothes, the Chinese make our toys and electricals, the Asians to feed us, the Indian's doctor us, the Africans to nurse us, the Romanians to plumb and build for us. Why?

In this country there are many British machinists that could cloth us, plumbers/ builders who can plumb and build for us, Doctors to doctor us, Farmers to feed us…. You get the picture.

As for the kids, what future do they have? Aprentiships have gone because the government doesn’t want to spend the money investing in the future of our children, and then we wonder why they hang around street corners causing trouble. The poorer kids can’t afford to go to university anymore, the government has taken away funding. And we let it happen, we let the government dictate to us and feed us shite ( pardon the pun)

we should lead by example, not just in what food we eat, but how we live.

Leave something for the next generation, that’s worth having.

At last two people talking sence! Well done Andrea and Craftycarper...........

The demise of values, society and a thousand other things (mostly in the past 10 years) has resulted in where we are today. No industries of our own, huge reliance on exports of cheap cr*p.....

As with every industry to date, agriculture will follow. I am lucky, I have land that generates an income and with careful management will continue to do so. Much of our land however is good for nothing other than shooting (moorland) and that will have to continue to make that vand viable. Other part of the farm are used for other enterprise including the mass cultivation of worms for the recycling industry, this I suspect will be the future for our farm, along with the shoot.

The sad state however, is that having inherited this land there is the constant need for heavy tax bills to be paid, and many farmers will be in the same boat, for that reason I have to contract myself out regularly to PMC's working in former war zones. The work is short term and lucerative and is the only way such bills can be paid while at the same time keeping the business runing as it does and not selling off land to pay the government. I wonder how many others are in a similar situation?

I'm lucky that the farm/shoot run themselves and are profitable, with the staff we have enabeling me to do this, but I still work over 70 hours a week.

Its a sad state of the economy that this mass import of rubbish has been fueld by an increasingly materialistic and apathetic society; we in the countryside really are the last line of REAL BRITAIN........

.........so by all means buy your two chickens for under a fiver from Tesco, or eat nothing but KFC to fuel the need for this rubbish; but don't ask for permision on my land and don't preach to me about values, call me a hypocrite or tell me I've got it easy with land under me feet. I'm not crying about it, I love what I have and what I do; as do all farmers; so let us farm.

I just watched the last of the program and saw some fat bird buying battery farmed chicken after she reared free range chickens of her own, her excuse was she couldn't afford the free range chicken but she had two of the battery chicken's in her trolly, fat cow. I buy organic free range chicken's because they taste like wild birds not like this soft flaverless shite, and I eat the whole lot not leaving loads of meat on it just to give to the dogs. I am quite sure if people ate more vegetables and less food generally that most would be able to eat well and there wouldn't be so many fecking fat people, like nearly half the country. And there was this bloke in a pub saying that the average wage in Axminster was twelve grand that is why people eat battery farmed shite, all this was said whilst drinking a pint that probably cost him £2.50 about half the price of decent chicken and it is ok to eat baby animals as long as it had a decent life. Thank feck I got that of my chest, slag me if you must you ready meal eating feckers. By the way most the meat I eat is caught or reared myself.

Amen

HEAR HEAR and I dont suppose the fat cow got fat on two cheap chickens a week, perhaps less spent on crisps and chocs and kentucky fried thered be more to spend on a decent chook.

I'm a prick? On one line I'm a prick, on the next we are mates??!!

Who ever suggested Sainsburys would stock game in the fur? I mearly pointed out the benefits of game over mass intensivly farmed rubbish, and that we should be doing what we can to persuade people of the fact. More traditional farming methods are closer tothe way game is produced, and its the results of those processes that used to be seen in butchers all over the land.....

As already stated this problem is a far deeper one, related to the economy on what is viable and what is not. Add that to the way of life we lead these days, social values and the quality time we get to ourselves. People do not shop around these days, why go to ten shops when you can get it at one, with bloody restrictions on parking this and that it's a joke you can't do anything these days without being restricted in some way or another, i don't agree with it but it is an easier life, the whole country and the way its run is a joke. Lets take a look at some other issues here then, the dentist situation and the chances of finding a NHS one, policing, jails it goes on and on, this country no longer believes in tradition they want to eliminate what we are all about full stop. I am a smoker, and to me its traditional to sit in a pub with a pint in one hand and a fag in another so they ban it :( yep i understand the passive smoking thing so why can't we have a smokers only pub, were staff are smokers only everyones happy, we have our rights as well, then i might be wrong so correct me if i am, cons cann smoke inside its their righhts, screws can't :hmm: i think i am right in saying that the mp's still have their smoking room in wherever they sit, the ban on foxhunting also the talk of smokers and obese people who maybe declined heath care on the NHS because of the lifestyle they lead, hang on a minute, i pay extreme taxes for the right to smoke add that to what i pay NHS insurance for all the years i have worked where the hell is that going i say, to rehouse some stupid immigrant and his family of seven and keep them in clothes food and water for years to come, what about my rights, and what about the obese people being turned away how dare they tell us what to do, its my llife. How many people turn up in casualty on a sunday from being injured on the footy pitch, what next sorry sir but you took it upon yourself to participate in this sport so we are gonna decline to treat you thats next it's all a load of :censored: cks as far as i am concerned. Council tax, income tax, death tax, vat, insurance scams, fuel tax, smoking tax, congestion charging, poxy olympic games tax, maybe turn us into a army of cybermen ay, don't answer back and do as we are told and no mouths to feed.... :censored::censored::censored::censored::censored::censored: , i'm off to work now to see what :censored: they're gonna throw my way tonight...and by the way we have to smoke outside five metres away from the building :wallbash::censored:

Feck me 18, 16 and 15 you sould be coming home to a clean house and a cooked meal at least once in a while. My son is only six and his mother and me are fine but he still has chores has small responsabilities, he is also given goals, he wants a dog but he will have to work for it, he will get feck all for nothing. If you are on your own then come on, your kids are not babys, christ two of them could have babys of there own. We are not straying from the point but it is exactly the point people taking notice of what they are doing, what they are eating, the way they are living. It's not about cutting corners so you have extra time to play x-box or go to the pub. It's about making time to appreciate life, strengthing your beleaves and this should start at home maybe sitting around the dinning table eating a decent meal (prehaps a free range chicken). :D:victory:

i blame their mother, my family have put so much in, my mother especially teaching them cooking, making cakes all sorts, but i'm affraid once they get to that age were they are independant as such, it all goes out the window. As for the family eating dinner around the table, i wonder how many actually participate in this these days, let me take a wild guess, most are sitting in the living room with their dinner plate resting on their lap watching eastenders or some form of crap on their wall mounted hd plasma screen while eating :whistling:

Getting back to the start of the topic our humble chicken for the family table(sofa) it's not just the farming and rural community that has been :censored: on by this and previous goverments, what about the fishing industry that they have decimated with their restrictions and bans, a long tradition of family fisherman going back generations who have had to pack it in because of some sort of legislation or another, and our industrial side, christ years ago we were one of or if not the top boat builders in the world look what happened there, years ago i would say each house grew there own vegs of some sort or another and look at the amount of allotments that have fallen over the last 15 years. I am affraid in some cases we are victims of our own success and tradition is now a thing of the past, education is poor to say the least mainly due to silly targets that have to be hit on paper, school punishment is a thing of the past which is a shame as i believe it has led to the future generations having no discipline whatsoever, the noose i believe was a deterent if the crime fits, the lethal injection would work, an eye for an eye i say. As for tradionalists how many kids these days could cook an omelete (not many) bet they would have trouble setting a table, how many can fix a peddle bike? how many can make something with there hands out of a piece of wood or metal, the only thing the youth of today are capable of is making a mess of things, downloading music, playing video games, poncing money and laying in bed all day :(
