Long shot barble info

Recommended Posts

So I've been fishing the river wharfe for barbel for the last few years and had some good numbers never had less than 4 and most was 11 on a night sesh between 17.30 and 07.30 then home. But they have all been between 6lb and 7.5lb. Now I know that's not a bad nights fishing on the barbel but I really want to catch some bigger ones this year and with season fast approaching I could do with some tips on places to go. Now I know everyone like to keep there Favourite spots under wraps hence the long shot barble info title lol but any info would be much appreciated. I'm in hull so closer the better lol.

Thanks

What's the main river Ouse fish like these days? If theres big fish  in a river, its only a matter of time before you get amongst them?, try prebaiting a few swims and doing half hr in each... Keep mobile, if your into fish, try fishing a rod, back from the main shoal and pick off the bigger fish... What you using bait wise? Change the size of your hookbaits, freebees etc, sometimes depending on conditions, waters low, summertime when it's weedy, I use upto 6 ft hook links, leadcore/tubing, back leads to keep everything pinned right down, find the deeper pools, fish the snags, ring in the changes, do something different to everyone else?IMG_20190908_192051_414.jpg.35089b0b791e117c42dd2690140a0567.jpg

The best advice I can give is to regard large barbel differently to the ones that you have been catching. You won't find the larger barbel swimming with the mid sized fish. But they will be in the same river, maybe in the same area. Just not in the same swim. The Wharfe is a lovely river and I have had plenty of doubles out of the Boston Spa / Collingham areas. But I didn't catch between 4 and 11 per session. Lucky to get 2 because the bigger fish are more solitary and are found in deeper channels, close to tree roots or between weed beds, not out in mid river with the 5lb - 7lb fish.

Look for deep channels on the outside of bends or where the river is squeezed narrower. Look for a gravel or stony bottom. Look for weed beds, tree roots or other forms of shelter because that is where the larger ones will be.For me, the closer to the near bank the better. In the olden days I used to religiously plumb the depth using a float and lead plummet. These days I just run an electronic fish finder through likely swims. It won't tell you whether a specimen barbel is there. But it will show whether the conditions are right for one.

Set up just upstream of there and bait it up before dark then wait an hour or so before putting your hook bait in. Give the chub and smaller barbel that might be attracted to the feed time to fill up and bugger off. Then pop a PVA bag with a few of your broken up hook baits, pellets or boilies and your hook bait and lob it out there. And leave it. Have confidence in your bait and let it fish out all session if necessary. You might blank. I did many times. I would give a likely swim three chances then assume there was nothing there.

The Wharfe still has clonkers as does the Ouse, Don and I believe the Hull is producing some. Or you could try the tidal Trent but that is a different type of fishing to what you are used to.

When I fish the Wharfe I usually fish 12mm spicy sausage dumbbell as hook bait over pva bags of red robins with a 4/5 foot hook length. Like I say I've not been short of fish just just cant hit the bigger fish.
