Up at the sheep farm although 90% of the lambs are a good way on now there is still a troublesome fox about bothering stock around the the farm. The farm hand has been baiting a hedge back in a small

That should be lesson learnt about mouse guns. Taking one for foxes is like turning up at a gunfight with a knife.  Stupid boy!?

Less your lip?Don't forget I could still give you a boot up the arse a feild apart?

Who mentioned Hornet?

Stav is using a hmr A.K.A mouse gun.

The only issue i have with hmr is i saw two foxes wounded one night with one and the lad was a good shot. It is a long story that i won't bother with but it put me off hmr for fox to the point that i won't let anyone use one that i invite to my permissions.

Hornet of either calibre cannot be compared to hmr, one is rimfire the others are centre fire and bear no resemblance to each other. What i can tell you from experience is .17 hornet is marginal on fox at 200yds. Even with a well placed shot a runner is most likely the outcome. And the problem at 200yds with its bigger counterpart the .22 is you would need to know the exact holdover at that range due to its more pronounced curved trajectory. Fine in daylight very difficult to judge range at night.

All of the above is why i will only shoot calibres with a flat trajectory, .204 is my chosen one and i have two of them. I would also shoot 22.250, .220 swift ( although a niche calibre ) or .243 using 55/58grn bullets. My own requirements may well differ from someone elses because i often have to take shots at extended ranges.

I’ve got no experience of the .17 hornet, but it’s true that .22 hornet hits so much harder than hmr that it’s in a completely different league. I’ll only take head shots with hmr, I’m not confident that it’s a great fox calibre.. A friend of mine usually takes his hmr foxing even though he has .222 and .243, puzzles me?. Having said that, he’s shot plenty with the hmr.

I've just ordered up a gong target?

What are you running through yours Gav?

Mainly sierra 150gn sbt loaded with N140 42gn but have 165gn sierra sbt I use with N550. I'm still developing a load for cast bullets at present.

What rifle did you get?

I've got a ruger American, I've got some federal 150grn nosler ballistic tip to try through it.

I'm not saying this is definitve, but if going .17, an example of some big mice:

Old video now. Some on here have tried it. Ultimately little to choose between .17 H and .22 H. Obviously goes without saying the larger CF's have more range but it's a good mid range gun if you're lookign for flat shooting.

.17 Hornet is an awkward cartridge to load for, nowhere as easy as .22 Hornet for loading.

It is a two hundred yard max fox round and i would expect to be looking for quite a few runners if shot at that range, even with good shot placement.

Did you notice how slick the bolt was on that Savage rifle...not! ? like rodding a blocked drain!

Had the "pleasure "of handling 1 at 1 of the   show,s and the finish was as good as a Baikal .Industrial would cover it ,rough n ready at a pinch .

Still it's made for a price and if you're not a tackle tart is a functional tool.
