what do you look for in a lurcher ?

Recommended Posts

as above , if you was after a pup, or another dog to bring in, what do you look for .?  Well for me ,  1st is temp , no point having the best catch dog in the world, if its scared of its own shadow , or if the fecker wants to fight every dog it meets , or worse it  use it teeth on people, i had the later kelipex collie x grey bitch was nightmare with people/dogs,  so i know what great temp in a dog means deff . 2nd size , now this not set in stone , as you get small dogs as good as some big dogs, same as sexes  , you can get great bitches and great dogs, for me i just get on better with males, size wise even though  i keep a big dog Buck  lol, ive always thought  a lurcher at 24-26in 60-70 lb spot on for most stuff. 3rd quarry, even though it just rabbits today, most lurchers will take edible quarry given the chance , but pre ban days , not all lurchers will do a fox, more so if they been pecked few times lol . i had a farm back in the 80s , with 100 acres  sheep/ cattle on it ,  i always tried to show me face day/night when they were lambing  , try to keep the foxes at bay , plus at the time i did bit beating for a shoot not far away, i did some doggin in for this keeper with my 1/4  pit 3/4 grey  , i spoke about him before a good dog , biddable , fast, not bad wind, and  do foxes . the keeper was not keen on lurchers, but let me on before the shooting season, and after, as they put partridge down as well as pheasants , and any foxes i got with him, put me in good light with the keeper lol . So to me i think a dog who do foxes,  very good thing to have and kennel deff ,  it dont matter what the type  x  , as long as it do all quarry day/ night, even though most of my hunting the last 30 years been lamping , there some very good lurcher x lurchers out there from proven dogs , that work good in the day with great nose finding  rabbits , birds, then do just as good in the lamp  what ever in front of them , thats the place to get pups from. hope we all safe and well, with  virus  and long shutdown     take care     Ray

I’ll alway have from pups I only keep bitches I always like a clean litter reared in clean conditions litter the pup would have to be clean it’s self chunky bright eyed alert an active things I look for is the pup moves freely with good feet that’s constructed right as pups go I tend to go for a pup between the longest back an the shortest so mid way I like rough coats so I try an gauge the quality of coat with what’s in front of me at the time for quality I know it changes after the pup coat turns to adulthood I like a pup that’s really interested in me an what I’m doing there looking at pups on the day I wouldn’t be there if I didn’t know the parents an what they worked like (2) 23tts up to 25 suits me I feel with to small a dog your restricted in so many ways a smaller dog has  to run a lot harder to do the same distance as a medium to largish runner I like a bit more power say a medium amount of power not a to heavy build an not to thin it breaks (3) I like a dog that will have a crack at anything be it On the lamp/ferreting/mooching I’m not up for all this dogs for one job stuff it’s got to be a trier at enything that pops up I’ve not got kennel space for a army of different dogs for doing every single job out there for Lurchers plus the time invested in any amount of dogs kept I’d rather invest time in a master of none I’m a big fan of lurcher to lurcher bred stuff love the traditional type all rounder Lurchers As my choice I try an keep to a type of lurcher I know are bred for my needs an what I need out of a dog

A connection, without a bond, even with a puppy you won’t put effort in, it I like it. I don’t care if it’s pink black or broon, rough or smooth as long as it catches me eye ?

now that true, you got to bond with pup 1st, if you like the animal  you put that bit more effort  in , i think as well , when people buy in mature dog , and things arnt going well , and not bonding to a dog can make  that much harder  deff.  i not a person , who atkes to these very sensitive type dogs and deff not puppys , i like a quite bold pup, but if mid type temp  i could live with that.
