Some people are unbelievable.

The shame is mate there is plenty of ground  that would lend itself to something like pheasant shooting, nice woods sitting above valleys that would present birds really well, plenty of water that you could feed for ducks.....but as has been said it’s spread out.

Now, the local gun club would have permission over all this in an area but they just ain’t interested in raising a few birds, feeding a few ponds and having a few days a season as well as the pest control that would inevitably go with it.

They would rather wander up a lane, blast a couple of things and go home or shoot clays !
Wankers like !

Used to be like that here as well wilf but this last few years theres a lot of small shoots all releasing birds and feeding flight ponds. A good friend puts 200 birds down on his farm but will only shoot a handful every year.

Ireland should be lifting with tackle considering how rural the vast majority of it is, but it isn’t because f**k all is done to promote or rear game, the red tape is bollocks and nobody can be arsed !

Shame, the gunclub system even puts the framework in for it to happen then. Just a total lack of direction.

Or motivation mate.....genuinely if they see 1 pheasant in a hedge row there are texts flying about in a group like they have seen Elvis !
I was a member of one for a year and f****d it off because they were all jokers !

The thing that I don't get is that I enjoy the management side of things as much as the shooting. Its really rewarding looking at what you have as a problem and figuring out short term and long term strategy to improve things while getting to do it all in the beauty of the outdoors. They're missing out in more ways than one.

Just put a pair in with you chickens if you have them and turn out the poults as and when they are ready to go, and admit nothing ✌️

That sounds like a tidy little idea mate, strange but the simplest things are the things you never think of.

Cheers pal

See the thing is a different culture. Most lads just go out for a shot and yes some cream themselves if they see a pheasant. But the want to buy good boots, cloths or anything of the sort isn’t there. If you were seen with a tie or any form of tweed you’d be labelled a gobshite or a wanker. Most lads go out with bottoms that they use for painting or something. The want to have some organised fun is not the done thing. I can’t see it change either.

PS: WILF, only one gun club in the whole  country have their own shooting rights. The rest let on they do, eg: say a club from dingle, co Kerry will tell everyone they have the shooting in that area but they don’t, the only thing they have is the same name as the area. Remember these clubs were formed by a few lads that had permission not rights. I sick of reminding lads this. ?

Didn’t know that mate, they say every day is a school day.

I was a member of a few clubs down through the years, the first one was the best, but to small, the other two were just interested in clays and nothing else really. That's all the younger ones wanted, the expensive guns and clothes, with thropys.

One fox drive, that just a few other members and myself organised, we said we would build the pens for rearing birds and look after them, the club foot the cost, they didn't want to know.

I left it and haven't joined any other since.

Sad really, as you said there's great potential here.
