Ferrets are like gold dust

Recommended Posts

What has happened to all the ferrets, there just doesn't seem to be any about at all. I used to breed them a few years ago and stopped because you just could not give them away in the end. I have been trying to get hold of one for ages, the local ferret rescue has them but insist they are in pairs when they let them go, thats after they come and do a home check and so on, plus the ferrets are neuted and chipped at £25 each, that's a whopping £50 if you don't mind. Well I guess I will just keep on looking, unless someone out there knows of one or two looking for a good home at a reasonable price.

p.s I live near Lincoln willing to travel a fair distance nothing silly

ferret rescue ,and sold in pairs usualy go to pet homes, and and at £50 id say thats a lot.

but when you came to workers would you say £50 is a lot ??.

i aint trying to put the price of ferrets up,but i now some who wouldent give £5 for a second or third season ferret,

and even a ferret that has worked a hell of a lot of rabbits.

if you think about it a ferret can account for a more rabbits in a season thanmost lurchers do in thier life time, and yet some woulden think twice

about paying over £1ooo for a lurcher.

the same as selling rabbits £1 the same as it was over twenty years ago. :icon_eek:

Damn good points from Tawney!

On top of that, as I was explaining to someone in Chat just an hour ago; I wouldn't sell a ferret, at this time of year, for love or money.

Why? Because as soon as it starts getting colder, forums light up with " Ferrets Wanted ". Oh aye? Now put that in the same box as " Ferrets are only a few quid a piece anyway, mate! " and see what comes out after ye shake it all together.

Simply put? There's Plenty of people out there who will look to buy Fresh ferrets at the Start of every season. Because they only cost a few quid each. Then, at the end of the season? They crush their skulls for them. I mean; Why bother to house, care for and feed something all summer through, when there's always some prick'll sell them Fresh ones, Next season?

" Only a few quid a piece anyway, mate! ".

I agree with both Ditchshitter and Tawny

I was at a stage a couple of years ago thinking of buying a lurcher.............i didn't i bought two more ferrets instead, reason, two ferrets cost me a tenner, they eat next to nothing, dont need annual boosters and account for lots lots more saleable rabbits than a lurcher or whippet ever could

Sadly there still are too many who buy new ferrets every season, years ago my brother went to buy a shotgun, the bloke got talking and asked what we did, my brother started talking about our dogs and ferrets, bloke replies you must be well into it (this was june) keeping ferrets during the summer, i looked up the garden and saw a big empty hutch, i said my piece and walked out :censored:

i get £5 for 4 rabbits, them ferrets would soon pay for themselves :D in fact annually my ferrets make a profit, which i consume :drink:

Well out of interest i rang the vet i use for a price for a spey & a microchip & they quoted me £ 65 for the two precedures so £ 25 is bloody good in terms of what it would cost you , and speying costs vary greatly depending where you live

Also if your ferret is chipped it can prrove ownership if the animals pinched as well as help find its owner if it escapes & is picked up

Most rescues spey & castrate before the ferret is rehomed reason being they dont want the kits next season , but theres still a huge amout being handed over , the rescue i have contact with in Coventry still have around 200 per year handed in

and there adoption fees are simmilar to what you were quoted

the point im trying to get across ditch is,ferrets ar worth a hell of a lot more than thy are sold for.

i for one wouldent think twise for paying hundreds of pounds for a good ferret if i had to,but like i say i aint trying

to push the price up,just trying to make people aware of how valueble ferrets are to us,as working animals.

the boys on here who buys them at say £2 as kits "and they still sell at that price " are often the ones who dont value a ferret,

and as ditch says they out them as soon as the summer sets in.

a pity realy as as most are no good atall untill the back end of the second season and into thier third.

and thats why some put no value on them ,because they dont keep them log enough to see their full potensial.

like i said i for one would be more than happy to pay hundreds for a ferret if i had to ,but as it is i value them

not only for what they are,but also the joy and the sport they give me.

and yes i would dig twelve ft for one of mine if i had to
