(Reuters) - British pub operators have asked for social distancing rules to be halved from two metres to one in talks with government on reopening, worried that many will have to close permanently otherwise, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

Yeah yeah, no worries, we'll just have a word with the virus and see if this is possible.

What have Austria done differently?

Just reading now. At a guess I'd say it was because they went on a UK style lockdown just four days after their first death.

On 12 March 2020, Austria confirmed the first death of COVID-19, a 69-year-old man from Vienna died in Vienna's Kaiser-Franz-Josef Hospital.

By 13 March 2020, there were 422 confirmed cases.

Potential COVID-19 infected persons should under no circumstances go to a doctor or to an outpatient clinic to reduce the risk of infection. They were asked to call the Healthcare number 1450 instead. On 15 March, there were about 70 times as many calls as on other Sundays before the pandemic.

On 15 March, a ban was also announced for public gatherings of more than five people, and restaurants were ordered to close beginning on 17 March. In addition, Günther Platter, the governor of Tyrol, announced a one-week lockdown for the whole province. Residents in Tyrol were required to remain in their homes except for necessary reasons such as purchasing food or medicine, visiting the doctor, withdrawing cash, or walking a dog.

As of 16 March, nationwide, homes may only be left for one of the following reasons:

  • necessary professional activities
  • necessary purchases (groceries or medication)
  • assisting other people
  • activities outside, alone or in the company of people living in the same household

Not sure about other factors, like how well prepared their health care system was, testing ability, social factors etc. They're a much less dense population too which I'd speculate is what has kept Sweden out the headlines.

I was in Berlin a couple of years ago with my Austrian ex. She got ill and we ended up in charity hospital. They suspected she had sepsis, so she was tested and had results within 30mins. Austria and Germany are pretty famous for having top notch testing facilities in all of their hospitals apparently.

Watched RT news tonight said the residents in old folks home with symptoms weren't allowed to go to hospital

My brother came off a shift the other day on the icu ward and they only had 3 people in and 1 of them was staff.

He said they are getting corvid cases in but not with respiratory problems, they are now coming in with other issues especially stomach complaints yet testing positive for corvid.

He's opionin is it will suddenly disappear before the end of the summer. He said not to repeat that though cos he will look like a nob if he's wrong. So remember if it doesn't disappear then he's a complete nob
