There are several different breeds of dogs, pigs, horses and chickens and owners that prefer something specific to themselves, especially serious owners,if i wanted a lap dog id not buy a Great Dane,if i wanted a race horse id not buy a Shire, both dogs and both horses yet totally different animals.

that's the point, why keep one type  of  earth dog when there is a better one, if that's the job your interested  in, the men that created all our wonderful old breeds of livestock knew their stuff, but as people started to move about  more, things changed, and breeds from other areas and even other countries started to have an impact, and  all have been shown by proud owners, and worked at the same time,, the show men have ruined some dog breeds that's for sure, but lots of breeds like cocker spaniels for example have split into two distinct types, and survived as workers, despite being popular show dogs. as for lurchers many types have gone by the wayside because their pasturel ancestor disappearing in favour of something better.

Why does there have to be a best one?,ive seen Russels every bit as good as Black terriers,Fells/Lakeys etc.I don,t believe you can go far wrong if you choose a terrier of choice and work it as others work their preference.I chose the Bedlington as a terrier of choice because it proved more efficient to my needs,if id not gone the beddy way id have stuck to the Fell/Lakey types, ive owned Russels and black terriers and i enjoyed the time i had with them, mostly. The Beddy had the same effect on me that other terrier breeds have on other terrier owners, some want a white bodied terrier, others won,t have anything but black etc.The "best one" for me is the Bedlington and ive done my best over the years to make them as good as id want any working terrier to be,i could have trod an easier path thats for sure as other terrier types are certainly more plentiful as far as grafters go,im happy with what i have at hand now and its the only terrier ill ever kennel now.

not a go at you or beddys just a reason why things become rare among working owners, a mate of mine had a lab greyhound that could do three out of three winter hares but it don't mean they all can dose it.

Trends and fashion methinks, not to long ago folk would not own anything but lakeys and Border/lakeys,find decent uns now,the black terrier is now all the rage.Once a dog of any type becomes popular the buzzards move in,dross is bred to dross to meet demand and feather the buzzards nest. The terrier to own over the last 20 odd years as been the black terrier and the buzzards knew when a dollar was to be had, look at the state of black terrier breeding now.The bedlington went through all that far earlier than most other types, the KC fecked the breed and the few that attempted to swim against the tide often floundered. Its an honest enough breed that a few diehards cling on to.Ive said, for over 30 years, that the Bedlington,as a grafter, will improve if a few like minded souls show a little honesty and breed hard, over 30 years later im still singing from the same hymn sheet, little improvement and more buzzards making a shilling from shite Beddy production.Ive done my best, could have done a tad more perhaps, others have played their part and there are still a few genuine workers to be had, far, far more pseudo workers owned by pseudo working owners still breeding for their ego and bank balance.

When i was a lot younger with my little grey beddy/Whippet some of the elder and far more experienced souls used to put down my little lurcher and often told me to get rid and better myself,i was always fairly confident with my lurchers and knew for a fact that i caught far more than most of them, with their superior lurchers.I wish at the time that Beddy/Greys were more abundant, still scarce now,yet if id have got my keen and eager paws on a bigger beddy lurcher,at that time in my hunting cycle,i may have never lost my lurcher soul.

You endlessly criticize other peoples beddlingtons and the lurchers that are bred from them, which is your right on a open forum Morton, it's easy to do, so why don't you breed a litter of beddie/greys from one of your superior beddlingtons, your words not mine,            and gift them or charge a small fee to cover costs to carefully selected working homes and improve things rather than just criticizing all the time ATB.

It’s easy to be a critic at everyone else on a open forum an sound like the voice or a god of bedlingtons or beddy Lurchers  but if your not trying with a resolution on the matter to improve what’s you keep or what’s out there available for others to keep with what’s being moaned about your actually apart of the problem an a opinion is worth nothing but nil an void an just waffle to a audience

every man that works a bedlington or beddy lurcher has to play his/her part accurately to improve what’s available with no kennel blindness or bumming up his own dogs Behind a screen....we all play our part
