My mistake mate, I thought it was to do with Henry VIII making himself head of the church and displacing catholic’s by invasion , Cromwell wanting to subjugate a Catholic nation on England prodestant doorstep etc etc etc ?

I'm talking before that .. but having said that the pope at the time was English ??

So who's in charge now, is Leo out?  The Irish language should be taught in schools, it's the native tongue after all, an it's no way dying out, there's a couple of good Irish schools in my area

I'll put it this way. My families name goes back to 1014 in this country, and I'm sure they spoke irish, and I'm not willing to let it die with me. My 7 week old granddaughter is spoken to in iri

I always believed it was to do with England having a Catholic nation on its doorstep and as part of its isle’s in the 16th and 17th century when Catholic France was an enemy of prodestant England ?
Catholicism basically equalled the pope and France, both of which were seen as enemy’s of the the King and England.

I always believed that every politics or para military atrocity committed since had its roots in that?

Ahh, but the pope was massively powerful in his own right I’d assume so a natural threat to the king ?

You all go on about the Brits done this the Brits done that , feck me it was hundreds of years ago when waring and killing was people's hobbies .. the fact was the Brits had an empire they were trying to expand and they done just that ..

Potato famine wasn't the Brits fault but they used it to there advantage , who wouldn't in that time ..

But that's ancient history

The killings im talking about happend in our lifetime ... Fact is the SF/IRA are murdering scum and who ever supports them can't have many morals .

I hope we never see a United Ireland because us protestants will be persecuted  .. I know of protestants living in the free state who's neighbors constantly try to intimidate them all for believing in a different version of the Bible .

chid ,i dont despise any race creed or colour so dont think im taking sides   ,but its a bit ironic you say the protestants will be persecuted ,..the catholics/irish  were way back.in the day in their own country....the tables must be turning ,..as for the potato famine ,it was no ones fault, but there was a lot more being grown and it was sent to the four corners of the world to feed the empire ..and our people were left to die .....but fuk it you could go round and round on this matter and no common ground found ..this topic has taken a turn for the worst i think lol

The Irish rulers at the time invited king William over to defeat king James ..

Let's not forget king William was married to king James daughter so all Ireland's and the UK's problems stems from a family feud ????

The amount of innocent people killed over religion is unbelievable, such a waste of life. Bad enough arguing about politics, but once religion is thrown in the mix, it's finished, with no positive outcome.

When I was going to primary school, this family moved into the aera for work. They were protestant. The two kids were sent to school with us. A school run by nuns and the local priest. Every day when prayers they were told to leave the class room, and when the priest came for catechism teaching, they were made sit out side in the shelter.

A bloody scandalous disgrace and disgusting thing to do, all because of religious beliefs.

Them nuns were pure evil, hateful human beings.

Now, this may be a controversial comment but for all the anti British sentiment in Ireland it was still British money that built most of it.

Why didn’t all those people stay and make the country function and a place the young people could stay ?
