Great era for characters and the events were much better back then if a little less organised lol.

I agree that competition was much better back then i cant even be arsed to watch it anymore........too much bodyweight strength these days i think the likes of Sigmarson,Magnuson,Pudzianowski etc were far stronger human beings than these giants today....for me a 19 stone Jouko Ahola had a far stronger structure than a 30 stone Shaw or Bjornson

Think alot of sports have gone that way athletes are just getting bigger and more freakish etc butbit seems that's what alot of the general public want to see.

Still prefer watching the strongmen to power lifters. Was looking into powerlifting as our gym is hosting a branch of the scottish open and there is just so many stupid rules etc then they break out the p4p arguement I couldnt be f****d with it.

Ive always said those strongman events, particularly the static lifts.....should be measured on a X bodyweight basis, similarly to how the old dog weight pulling competitions used to.

A 19 stone man pulling a 20 ton truck is showing far more strength and power than a 30 stone man pulling a 21 ton truck....stands to reason dont it.

Can see your point there but then look at powerlifting you can use elbow wraps knee wraps wrist wraps and you can deadlift sumo bench with a few inch range of motion etc yet they try and shit on strongman for using wraps to deadlift.

I understand the p4p strength argument but I also understand these massive guys lifting alot more weight although it may not be p4p they are still lifting more. What I'm saying is p4p is good bit also just doing whatever you have to to lift the most weight is also just as good. Would you rather watch a 60kg female deadlift 120kg or somebody who massive deadlift 500.

Its either a strength competition or a size competition.........me i prefer a strength competition its a far more impressive human attribute than size.

Yeh that jouko ahola very strong bloke, just looked at his training vid,  didn't need exsess weight, like  Shaw etc, to lift the weights, just natural raw power, healthy diet, and training.

for those with an intrest....

Julius Maddox....the American powerlifter has just broke his own world record for the second time in bench press ....it now stands at 755 lbs or 342 kilo he did this in training so I don't think it counts as official ....his previouse record was 744lbs...and a before that 737 lbs...all done in the last 6 month or less...

this is a raw bench press only using wrist straps...no bench shirt or anything

that's a fair point....its one of the reasons I like watching the lighter weights in powerlifting....theres two women that can pull a deadlift 5 times there own bodyweight ....or cailor woolam that can pull 430 kilo ...but only weighs 15 and half stone....

Have to say though ive seen plenty of phenomenal gym lifts from chaps whos strength had no relation to their power its like the torque and horse power of an engine Shaw/Bjornson are the huge trucks with massive torque Ahola/Pudzianowski were the high bhp sports cars.......give me explosive power over core strength all day long.

That's probably not far from a world record for your weight that is legit. Conventional or sumo?

its not rusty....its almost 200 pounds heavier at that weight.....not to take owt away from socks....cos that's some lift for a real amature
