Guest SJM
I watched it and found it interesting, but then I am a big fan of Hugh anyway I usually order lamb and beef mince from my dogfood supplier but recently they told me they had ran out and would I accept 2 boxes of chicken instead, I reluctantly agreed as I thought it would be better than having no meat at all, but as it turns out the dogs wouldnt eat the fecking stuff at all. They turned their noses up at it, and my dogs are not fussy eaters at all, they normally eat whatevers put in front of them, bones, biscuit, rabbit, hares, etc etc but this chicken boy was it hard work getting them to eat it. I ended up having to buy some eggs and put egg in with it, that worked for a day or two, then they were actually pushing the chicken out of the bowls to get to the biscuit I had mixed in to try and give it flavour. I tried putting oxtail soup through the mix to encourage them, they licked up all the soup and left the chicken. Now this is minced chicken leftovers from human grade chicken and my bunch of scabby hounds wouldnt eat the stuff, would I buy or eat chicken from supermarkets? errrr no thanks

Guest little_lloyd
Personly i prefer meat that is either local or free range,, but will eat any meat that my mother buys the family if its infront of me. We try to eat local produce and game that ive bought home as often as we can , there is some cracking farm shops around here with food to die for.
pointer28 1
I love meat but the two types of meat that I buy the least are chicken and pork. It's not the meat that I have a problem but the farming methods. I used to deliver feed to piggeries and some of those places really turned my stomach. I just don't feel right eating something that never saw daylight and was stuffed to the gills with medicated powdered feed every day of it's miserable life. If I ever get around to buying my own little place in the country I'm definitely gonna have 2 pigs and a couple of chickens. While I totally agree with Hugh's idea I very much doubt if he'll be successful. It's easy for me as a single man to spend an extra few pound and buy quality meat but if I was a single mother, or a low income family then maybe it wouldn't be so easy. What was the programme about anyway I missed it, saying that I don't often look at the telly. Gnipper

Caravan Monster 323
Haven' t bought meat from a supermarket in years myself. Be aware though that a lot of meat in butchers can come from the big markets and is produced in the same skanky places as supermarket meat- pork and chicken especially. Would be interesting to know if the people on the estate in Axminster who HFW will undoubtedly convert are still growing their own in two or three years time?
Tis TM 8
Haven' t bought meat from a supermarket in years myself. Be aware though that a lot of meat in butchers can come from the big markets and is produced in the same skanky places as supermarket meat- pork and chicken especially. Would be interesting to know if the people on the estate in Axminster who HFW will undoubtedly convert are still growing their own in two or three years time? CM you're right about that - I know first hand that butchers buy from larger wholesalers - Small butchers just dont have the buying power to be able to get thier meat in the quantities that they require, at an afordable price. I'm not say that ALL butchers do, with ALL thier stock, but look at it like this, for arguments sake, say he bought in a side of beef - There is obviously going to be the less favourable cuts that dont sell as well, so whats he going to do, just keep selling the 2/3rd's of more popular cuts, and just keep stock piling the 1/3 thats left? I think not. Even the small butchers buy in seperate strip loins - or just the hind quaters etc etc, and to do this they use a wholesaler. Times are changing though with all said and done, and even a wholesaler would be a fool to think he could just keep shipping in case loads of the same old intensively reared poo, and knock it out cheap as chips, cos that's what people want. We are all becoming more aware of the conditions our food is being raised under, and quite rightly so. H.F.W will undoubtedly prove that free range chicken has been treated better, and that the end product looks better (ie colour to the meat) and has a far superior taste. But I suspect however, that with the imenant threat of a recession hanging over this country, the masses will opt for the cheaper chicken every time. I rear my own ducks, chickens, and will soon have me a few porkers
