Well,, Knocked up a snare pole earlier as i liked glenns article on it and have wanted to give it a go for a while now.

Thought i would share some photos so you can say what you think.

I chose the spot for it by one of my feed hoppers the squirrels are consantly knawing and chewing and damging the hopper and taking more feed than the birds :wallbash: Ive been using a fenn in a tunnel under the hopper over the last few days and taken four like that but decided to set this up insted.

The hopper is on a nice oak tree on the ride and i fixed the pole with the baitstaion from that oak to a near by hawthorn, the squirrels use both the trees regully.

Only problem with the baitstation im using ( big round tree guard) is that the bait falls out onto the woodland floor so ill need to make is so it cant.

Ill leave it for a week so the squirrels can get confedent using the baitstation before introducing the wires,, ill keep it posted on here

Please post your thoughts!!

Did you let them get used to the baitstation for a few days first or have the wires set all the time?

In the article it says set the wires 4 1\2 '' high, seems a bit high for a squirrel,, how high are your wires set at>?

Link to post

i set mine just like glen says mate four and a half inches

i tried one pole at three inches high but didn t have the catch rate like the others at four and a half inches

i left the bait for three days then put the wires on

just do what glen says and you can t go wrong he s the man

LLOYD ,

CUT TWO BISCUITS OF WOOD TO FIT INSIDE THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE BAIT STATION AND SCREW THROUGH THE SIDES , ATTACH THE STATIONS WITH TIE WRAPS

IVE FITTED UP THREE POLES 12 TO 14 FEET LONG SET UP IN ONE WOOD , THAT WAY I CAN FIT EXTRA WIRES ON THE RUNNING POLE USUALLY 4 , ............ BY SPRAYING THE BAIT STATION .... YOU WILL STOP POSSIBLE HUMAN INTERVENTION .......... YOU WILL " NOT " STOP BIRDS ATTRACTED TO THE STATION  ,

IVE LEFT THE BAIT STATIONS UP TO A WEEK ....... BEFORE .......... " SETTING " THE READY PLACED SNARES , ON WHICH I USE THE STAINLESS STEEL WIRES

PERSONALLY I USE A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SET UP TO SNAREMANS , THOUGH ONE HE ASKED ME TO TRY ..... WHICH IS VERY DEADLY , { WHICH INCIDENTLY WORKS WELL FOR MINK } ............ AROUND ONE BIRD TABLE ....... IN A FRIENDS WOOD ADJOINING HIS HOME .......... I RECENTLY SNARED 19 , IN THREE CONSECUTIVE WEEKENDS ............ SINCE THEN IVE DONE A ANOTHER TWO MOP UP HITS , BOTH TIMES CATCHING ONLY A SINGLE , .......

CAN I ASK SOMETHING ? ........................ WHY DO YOU THINK PROBABLY THE MOST EXPERIENCED TRAPPER IN THE UK WOULD GO TO ALL THE BOTHER OF TYPEING UP THE INFORMATION ON SQUIRREL SNAREING ... STATEING SET THE NOOSES AT 4 1/2 " .... IF IT DIDNT WORK ???????????

HOPE THIS HELPS

LITTLE LOYD , I FORGOT TO STATE IN THE ARTICLE , MAKE A LITTLE CUT IN EACH SIDE OF YOUR PLASTIC TREE GUARD AND BEND IT UP FROM THE BOTTOM AND THEN STAPLE IT THIS STOPS YOUR BAIT FALLING OUT OR USE A BOTTLE WITH ONLY THE TOP PART AT EACH END CUT OF THIS STOPS THE BAIT FALLING OUT , REMEMBER ITS ONLY A SIMPLE BAIT SET TO GET THEM RUNNING AONG THE POLE , TRUST ME ITS VERY EFFECTIVE , ASK DUCKWING , OR WOODGA , PEG AND GUN KILLED BIG NUMBERS WITH IT .
