psycho ferret-what do i do?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I think i need to do 3 things;

1. put him in a larger cadge or a run.

2. Get him a jill from some where but my chances of getting a good jill are remote.

3. Get him spade.

As you can understand i am now scared to handle him and as he has caused me so much pain when he bites i really do feel like getting the .22 out.

i got my ferret when it was just off its mother and was fine i was handling it everyday along with my other ferrets but one day i tuck it from its cage and it just decided to start nipping me it went on like this for round about 3 weeks i give it a bigger hutch along with a bit more meat at each feeding and then it was back to normal within about a week your might wont to try this your self

ferrets can be easly stressed and become aggresive if it dosent have enough space :hmm:

a bigger cage + some tubes and toys for it to play with and rag round might help take the edge off. boredom and hunger seem to make them not just nip but dig deep and hang on. i still dont trust my 8 year old hob unless ive washed my hands first-the smell of food other ferrets or the dogs still sends him wild good luck

i know a lad who has a few ferrets, including a hob that is supposed to be vicious as hell. after a couple of weeks of him banging on about the deadly beast, he finally let me handle it. it was the smallest full-grown hob i've ever seen, it only tried to bite me once, and received a good smack for it's efforts. the main problem was that the lad & his brothers were scared of it. if you think it's going to bite, you'll pull your hand away as soon as it goes near it, even if the ferret just wants to sniff you. the ferret sees a retreating bit of pink, and lunges.

if you really can't get on with it, send it to me. i've not yet met the biter i couldn't fix!

Hi

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I am scared to handle him as he bites me so i don't handle him very often at all,i go to the shed once a day to feed him but i don't handle him if he comes to attack me.

the rabbit hutch is not that big and there is no free ruining area.

He also tries to bite through the wire of the cadge as if he wants to get out.i some times let him out to run around the garden.

some times he is docile but mostly he`s aggressive.

a couple suggestions..

first you say he's not handle much... thats not gonna help him trust you, you to trust him or you to teach him not to bite. He can definitely smell and sense your fear.

He needs MORE of your time, not less. Some tips for "nip or bite training" develope 1 technique and stick to it, a sharp NO is a good method to use to teach him not to bite, smacking, flicking or hitting when he bites just encourages agressive behaviour. American forums suggest the scruff and drag method, if he bites, scruff him and drag him along the floor a bit making a sharp NO . This is suppose to mimic the mother or alpha behaviour showing him YOU'RE the boss. You might also see if there are any experienced owners in your area that might give you a hand .. perhaps they can see something you cant ?

Some more room is definitely in order and he may settle a bit more with more space to run off some energy

a friend is a good idea as well, though i suggest making sure they get along before commiting to one or you'll end up with fighting ferrets and two seperate cages.

and getting him castrated is suppose to make them more docile though i've not done it so cant comment on it.

most of all persistance and consitancy is the best method .. and as has been suggested already .. if you really cant handle him you've had a few offers already... maybe give him up to someone who can and try a more docile ferret.

all the best

Heather
