stumfelter 3,034
I was watching a programme about ww1 and a bit came on about dogs being used as messengers etc, then they showed a register of the dogs and I couldn't believe how varied they were. Apparently they used to run messages as too many soldiers were getting killed and the dogs stood a better chance as they were lower and quicker. Couple of terrier crosses so they'd probably help with vermin control as well. Took a screenshot of the register so hope this works.

eastcoast 4,138
Airedales were used by the police and military early/mid 20th century. Quite ironic that were replaced by the German breeds after WW2.

jok 3,266
Strange but true. Had a conversation with a kennel lad today and he asked if I knew anyone who bred Airdales. The answer was no. Are they an endangered species?jok.
forest of dean redneck 11,614
They reckon that is where lot of the old style drover type dogs went and then they lost the types as they got killed.
Chaff 3,622
Apparently Custer had over 40 hunting dogs with him during the battle of big horn, and Jeff believes that the deerhoundy looking one to be of his line? Or it could be a proper deer hound. 1

What's amazing to me is that all them lads have had there lives saved by an animal. Wether it horse/dog or pigeon.. It's a similar feeling to walking across a frosty field in the morning with a lurcher and a few ferrets in a carry box. You are outnumbered 2 to 1 But all work together as a group and have 1 mission and that's to catch rabbits.
