My vets are great. I can take my dogs in without an appointment as an emergency and they will take them straight in with no worries about the bill until the treatment is completed.

I'm very lucky to have such a good vet, when my grey broke her tail they wanted to amputate but I wasn't keen and instead of pushing for amputation they let me try and save the tail and I did, with their help.

That bill qote of 750 squid is disgusting! I recon the office of fair trading could be bought in on that?????

If the wound was fairly superficial, as long as its been properly cleaned, stitching is quite easy to do. You can buy a stitching kit quite easily, and even get the needles and syringes you need + lignocain and adreanaline (local anaesthetic) from an agricultural merchants. I went to Agric college and learnt an awful lot, including surgical procedures, so I'm not phased by much, but I wouldn't advise just anyone to have a go.

My vets are expensive but thats ridiculous. Always buy your wormer from an Agric. merchants if you can, and not the vets, they wack on an extra £7.00 for a bottle of 10% liquid panecur at mine!! :icon_eek:

i think the main reason for the sky high price is the risk involved with puncture wounds, especially from wire... risk of infection is higher.. still, you can do what every they can do. you just wont have the same meds. but even if they DO treat your dog and you pay their price you're still not promised an infection free recovery!

a few years ago my moms collie got into a fight, went into shock - wounds were superficial though - went to the vet... came out of the shock, they said she would be free to go home.. once she got back home she panicked and went right back into shock and died two days later. there were NO internal injuries. the bites were not even worth a glance, but we still paid through the nose for treatment and it still didnt save her. that dog was just really sensitive and panicked easily.

some vets will bank on your ignorance and willingness to pay to save your dog. its good to want to save your dog and do what you can for it.... but they shouldnt be taking advantage of you for it! and yes more animals suffer as a result. when my JRT was a pup she was run over by a car and the vet refused to see us unless i paid first. i didnt have it! my friend paid for it herself.... there was nothing wrong with the dog... just some road rash.. nothing broken! but they still refused to even have a glance until they had money

Just a suggestion, someone I know with lurchers doesn't insure them but each month puts money aside that would be used for insurance for instances such as this.

I agree that £750 is very high for stiching a wound but any of us with lurchers could find ourselves in this sort of position as they are so thin skinned and accidents happen, even illness another friend has just had a £1500 bill for her lurcher that suffered from Pyothorax. Luckily insured but she's having trouble now getting the insurers to pay out.

my dog had his crucial ligament and cartilage done the vet also put a plate in to reinforce the knee , ligament and cartilage the dog had 2 nights stay in the vets all his meds 4 visits back for checkups all cost 200euros.

I think the vet is one of the best dog vets in Ireland

Crikey! I can't believe some of these horror stories. I thought I was being hard done by when I got home after my last visit to the vet for worming tablets and discovered that for two dogs needing 1 1/2 tablets each they'd sold me 4 tablets ie 2 per dog. Mine just pales into insignificance compared to some of these. :(
