Recurve bows

I was talking to someone about bows yesterday after seeing the recent compound bow thread and I mentioned I was thinking of getting one to have a mess about with out the back and he said he had a bow in the loft that I could have .He wouldn’t take anything for it and just said it’s been in the loft for years and would of stayed there so you might aswell take it .The limbs are win & win and the main body he said is an Hoyt and there’s a carbon arm that screws in and a sight but I think something is missing from it because I can’t see how it would fasten on . I don’t know anything about bows but I’m assuming I don’t need the sights and arm just to mess about in the yard with it because I’m only going to be shooting around 30-50ft . Also how substantial does the target need to be , I’ve seen some foam ones on eBay and they just say suitable for low/medium power bows but not a lb number . There’s a 7ft brick wall behind anyway but I don’t want the arrows flying straight through and smashing on the wall

I just about get away with this, but it’s not great. I’ve got a 45lb recurve & at 30m the arrows will go through that foam about 6” into the bale. I should of gone higher with the bales as loads have gone over, but haven’t had to worry about a wall, though my chickens had a few close shaves!  The problem I also had was tips coming out in the foam.

I wish I’d got a proper target backing, but I’d spent enough on the bow at the time. Atb

I don't know much about bows but, I know you've done well to get a Hoyt for free

 

I'd go for one of those backstops that looks like a load of foam sheets stacked up and clamped, maybe even put a couple of sheets of 18mm ply behind - some of those bows can have a lot of power.

I used to use sleepers stood up side by side, five of them, made an ideal back stop.

That’s the one mate, stacked & clamped rubber, though I’m gonna get a 3D roe buck in the new year to make it far more interesting

There’s a sticker on one of the limbs that has 2 numbers on , 36lb and 38lb so it’s not as powerful as yours but I don’t want to take any chances so I’ll order 2 and put them back to back and put a bale behind that

They're different poundage depending what riser your using, 23" or 25" to make 66" or 68" with limbs.

I use 32lbs @68 " for plymouth rounds and 45lbs over 50 yards on out door comps.

I use a rag bag for compund (75lbs) and crossbow (170lbs) as they will destroy any boss for recure.

You should have a sight bracket on the riser secured by two screws with another single thumb screw to secure the sight. Mine may be different but you'll get the idea.

I saw one when I went to Phoenix archery for an arm guard and tab and it’s the arms that attach the sight to the riser and adjust up and down  that are missing  , the actual sight bit is there and also the bracket on the riser .

Ah those 2 worked, but the third says max 14mb and its only 7mb
