hows it going lads i shoot over two springers all rough shooting next year will probaly be the old dogs last year im thinking of getting a lab x springer has any body got any experiance of this strain all advice welcome thanks

Can I ask why you are thinking of getting a cross ? a springer is more than capable of hunting and retrieving and a lab makes an excellent shooting companion, so depending what your shooting why not get a springer or a lab rather than a cross breed ? I can't see the benefit of a cross at all ?

Iv currently gotta a springer cross lab purley for dogging in and the odd bit of rough shooting (still only young), there really isnt anything to gain or lose for that matter by crossing. i seem to have struck lucky with mine mind, she has the hunting instinct of the springer, decent size to her, doesnt put on weight to easy yet she is very biddable and layed back, alot of cross breeds work out for the better and you dont know unless you try, find a litter out of good dogs and it will be a useful dog.

Or, as you're used to working a pair of dogs, why not a lab and a springer?. I've often thought that would be a nice combo if one could handle them properly.

You may get the worse faults of two I would go for one or the other or both.Please dont take it the wrong way as there are some good crosses about ..

Its all dependent on the dog itself, labs arnt best known for hunting but all breeds throw differant ones, spanials are pritty much garenteed if the lines are right for hunting. My lab will hunt cover almost as good as the springer but the size makes the springer better. Labs will hunt but there not as keen generally. Its all dependent on what you really want to do?

If you want a dog that hunts ad will enter thick cover then it would be best to get a spaniel, I have 2 nice abs but they dont enter cover like my spaniels do thats for sure.....

i have a 3/4 lab 1/4 spaniel he will face any cover hunts well and is a good retriever i take him on our walk one stand one shoot and he is good in the beatting line but can olso turn his hand to a bit of picking up as well

Never heard of that breed before but they look quite nice dogs i have a springer so i dnt know much bout crosses

As a keeper I see a lot of both breeds working throughout the year. You say your a rough shooter, therefor one of the spaniel breeds would seem the better choise. As they are generally better hunters than pure labs. But the springerdors I have seen working (which is about a dozen) are very good dogs and can certainly hunt very well. And they often seem a bit steadier.

im glad to hear they are good dogs as my sprocker bitch has just had a litter with my yellow lab dog, so i guess they are sprockerdors? they wernt planned but these things happen!! im going to keep the only yellow bitch, and am going to try to sell the others 2 yellow dogs and 2 black with white bib bitches, im looking forward to seeing what they look like ( they are only 3 days old at the moment) though they look like labs at the moment, when they are a bit older i will try and get some pics of them on.
