My father told me that his father had a lurcher way back in the 1920sand when he needed new boots he would go to the shop that had them on show outside.he would then try a pair on then go round the corner and send the dog back and he would retrieve them

Thats me on the left ( bowl head ?) with our mongrel 'lurcher' Trixy. She had a habit, if there was anything to be caught (R,R,H,P,P,P- work that out?) Of sneeking off and fetching back her catch.

Then secretly stashing it, always in somewhere it would easily be found... My dads work boots, behind the milk bottles on the step, under the caravan step, a full washing basket and best of all, in my parents bed..!

No one 'ever' seen her do it but, say when we were away in the caravan, the dead critters (mostly rabbits) would be found daily, sometimes twice daily.

She never wore a collar, was never lead trained and had freedom to come and go as she pleased. As kids we called her the 'living cushion' because she was always sleeping on the couch and never moved, no matter how rough we played...

Then as she was there, she was gone... And you could bet your life that you'd next see her back on the couch and me Mam would find a dead critter sometime soon....

Growing up, thats what i thought a Lurcher was and did.

We also had a Grew (whippet/greyhound) that ran and cought rabbits etc but a Lurcher propper, knew how to 'nab' em... ?

when i was young lad .8 or 9 we had  black/white mongrel  dog  Tim , he was out side on a chain/ kennel  in out garden . this was about 1961 . he was great little dog, loved our family , me dad loosed him off his chain, when he went to work, in them days all dogs were loose on out counsel estate   W- ton . Tim would fight any dog that tried it on with him , he had real hard scrap with big black type Alsatian , this fecker nearly killed him, me mom took him to vets to get stitched up . he lived till he was  12 years old found him dead on his chain , i loved  that little dog, vet thinks he was Irish terrier  x collie  type thing, either way had big old heart on him , he was like some of our staffs that we had later  in life, they were more  pits of today ,  this was then  about 73 .  but never forgot little old tim   lol .

When I was about 13yrs old I kept my ferrets in my friends garage and a stray border terrier x lab (sandy)that used to be abused by owner  became a regular visitor to the garage .  He would follow me to school  about half mile away and sit at the gates till I came out!    He was a brilliant ratter and boy could he scrap. He ended up living in the garage  after me n few mates had enough of his abusive owner   when I was 16yrs old I bought a van for ferreting trips  and he was always 1st choice to go even over mates lol   died aged 18 and when people say you only get one "real" dog in your life time I think I was blessed to have had "old sandy"
