WILF 46,775
Hi lads, is there a calibre that you would recommend as an all round rifle that will deal with fox, crow, rabbit? Need to be able to hit foxes at reasonable range so a normal .22 Lr probably won’t do. Any advice welcome Quote Link to post
Sox74 20
You could try a 22.250, a bit large for rabbits, but great for foxes. Or a .17, has good range also, should take a fox in and around 50 to yards. Atb sox Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
HMR is perfectly capable on fox to 110-130 yards (some will say more) but I'm comfortable up to about 130, and easy on rabbit, crow etc. Everyone has different requirements but the majority of my fox are under 100, so a HMR does it easily. Stavross 15,539
I’d go .17 HMR for all of them but some think they are better suited for mice, there’s also the 17 and 22 hornet 1 2 Quote Link to post
David.evans 5,323
Agree with decker and stav 100 / 130 max for fox 17hmr more than enough for rabbits and corvid atb Quote Link to post
Gav 1,708
Another for .17hmr, but I'm swapping mine out soon for .22 hornet, purely for economics though. 1 Quote Link to post

What ranges do you expect to be shooting at? I somewhat shocked by my colleagues!N Notone of them suggested a 22 wmr! If you do go with a hmr get a swift like rifle, one that shoulders like a shotgun, those mice are twitchy little feller's! Edited August 20, 2019 by Sausagedog Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
22 hornet. Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,763
Any 22 centre fire. Saves f***ing around. 2 Quote Link to post
ianm 2,594
I personally would go for one of the "Hornets" 17 or 22. Probably .17 if using factory ammunition. I definately wouldn't use a hmr on fox. As sd says wmr is another contender, but for me the Hornets will cover everything with ease. 1 Quote Link to post

My WMR is very capable and gives me a lot of confidence, if the question was fox then as a general response I would probably have said WMR. Add rabbit and crow into the equation and the balance tips to HMR in my opinion! 2 Quote Link to post
