talking to my mate tonight,we came about the age best to enter terriers.

we both agree that the best terriers we ever had have selfe enterd before hier first birthdays ,

and most about the eight to ten month area.

and they never look back if bred right.

and before you say they should be 18 months, like they do in the books,i think they should enter when they like

with care.

what do you terrier people think ????

Whilst they may indeed enter before their first birthday how many Terriers get sickend by entering to early????

I would say many a promising Terrier has been ruined by entering to early they do not posses the mental ability to back off generally and for the fist couple of digs youve got yourselves a real tasmanian devil....Then it all goes wonky and the animal gives up all before 12 months thereby ruining a potentially good Terrier :icon_eek:

two of my terriers ran out of my front door, (my mistake) and both self entered, this brought my dog on, but i have held him back till now and my bitch jacked, they were both around 9 months at the time, the dog now goes finds and stays even in the deepest of places, he is 20 month and bays at first then really gets stuck in, i am taking it easy on him, but is really impressive at the minute. the bitch was frightened of a hole and just used to sit at the entrance, now she goes and the longest is 40 mins although she can find in big tubey places, she does get the run around and keeps coming out, a few more digs and she should get the jist of thigs ,

i may sound stupid mate but you can tell the workers at as young as four months old.

and there dont seem to be no tasmanian devil in them, just quiet relaxed pups ?.

they realy do make the workers.

born to work,not taught,like some ?

born workers dont jack either, taught dogs do ?

so where do you draw the line then ?.

if you think about it ,you've got two terrier pups.

one you dont hear at al no barking, just sits there ? and takes the world in .

the next is the loud type ,fight when he can piss you off,and do you head in ???

i know who would make the better worker out of the above ,9 out of 10 times.

Thats the point fella it may be the worker ut enter to young and you will f**k it up big time its about timing any nob can see if its game the art is when to enter it and only drip feed to keep it engaged without sicking it

i think you boys have been reading all the wrong books

im in the same boat when to enter a terrier my youngest dog is 10 month old now and has been at a few digs and when he is pegged out hes screaming to go but in the kennel a totally diffrent dog dont hear him even though i know he will go now i personally dont think he is mature enough to meet anything in the dark yet :whistling:

as the saying goes only you know when your dog is ready

well mate all i can say is that some do enter at nine months, and as for being worth a carrot, your wrong .

the worst thing you can do to any young terrier is to stop him going to ground.

ok stop him at going in holes that might hold a fox when he's young, but what do you call young ??

in some it could be two years old and in others it could be nine months but you kow when they are ready.

if you take time with your dogs, watch them look at them you'll suss them out soon,

but like i said the best dogs we've had all selfe enterd at about nine or ten months old.

and iff they are bred right it'll do no harm to them, and that is a real FACT!

i remember posting a very similar topic a year or so back about my terrier banty... he was more my dads dog than mine and had the run of the farm... he went to ground from around 6 months maybe even before that and i remeber him coming back daily with tags and scrapes on him... when he got about a year old or plus i took him out on a few digs... he started well but became a dog that blew hot and cold... great white hunter on here has his father and kept back a sister... i dont know how she faired out but i wonder would mine have been better if he was better looked after???? i always leaned towards the notion that a well bred terrier would forgive a bad start but its hard to know unless you can turn back time and do it over :)
