I would say it depends on the lock in question...

Mine only comes out when locked

gun box has two locks so I put 1 of each key on the keyring locks are 2 ft apart so that's not going to work is it unless I put them on a chain seems a bit of a faff

If your refering to a gun safe, it's logical! To make sure you lock it , keys should not be able to removed when unlocked

What about a bungie cord or a quick release clip for one key or both

I have two cabinets of different makes and on both units, I can remove the keys whilst unlocked as both sets of keys are on rings so I open one lock then take out the key and open the other. Never seen a cabinet where you cannot remove the keys whilst unlocked.

I've got Brattonsound single key vault type cabs and I can take the keys out when they are unlocked. I just tried it to make sure.
