Fired by yesterday's minor triumph I returned to the scene for a couple of hours this evening. I approached the swim with care in case any Environment Agency types were laying in wait after hearing of

After the previous picture of the lovely barbel I feel this post could be an anti-climax. Anyway it was off to the little stream for the second round of the day. Trotting maggots proved useless b

I seatrout and trout. River like Willy Wonker chocolate river at moment still rising, hopefully it will start to clear soon?

I bet the river levels will be really helping them get about at the moment. I found a huge fresh otter killed salmon here in north Yorkshire the other week on the    U R E. Poor bugger was trapped in a shallow pool. Hope your conditions improve and good luck with your fishing. Atb Tom.

I've just been to a swim I haven't fished for a couple of years. While I was there I heard a car pull up and then at least twenty loads of bait hit the water about 50 metres downstream. The guy came up and asked how I was doing. It seems that he puts in loads of shovel fulls of maize every day or so to ensure that he catches when he night fishes in an area where no night fishing is allowed. He then went on and baited up anther two or three swims upstream with the same quantities. Unsurprisingly I hadn't had a bite. I don't understand the mentality of those who pre-bait to that extent. Its like shooting fish in a barrel when you regularly pile bait into a few swims and the rest of the length gets nothing.

The way I fish is to initially walk the lengths and use water craft to locate where the fish are. I might use polaroids, binoculars, a fish finder and / or plummet and float to get an idea of the bottom features and depths and check for snags, water temperatures, etc and make notes. Then I'll go back another time to fish specifically for the fish I am after by using appropriate baits and methods.  I can't do with all this making the fish bait dependent and then chucking your hook bait into the area where the fish are waiting for their regular feeding session. It takes all the skill out of fishing IMO.

each to their own mate?I catch fish where ever I go,what ever species im after can easily  average 150/200 plus barbel  a season,19 fish per session is my best few seasons back...trickling bait in out of season, saves humping gear around looking for the likely spots, the barbel are very nomadic....being able to read the river, colour, flow all helps, bait a few swims then drop and do an hr in each....extract a few fish on to the next?

By regularly piling in bait in two or three swims you are making it hard for other anglers who have just as much right to fish the stretch as you do. They could turn up and fish for several hours without a bite because the fish are stuffed full with the bait you had put in just before they arrived. Or they could choose a swim that is devoid of fish because they are all feeding in the baited swims. You are not fishing for wild fish. The fish have become domesticated and dependent on your baiting program so effectively you might as well be fishing in your own bath.

As Bob Roberts once said; do anglers really think that they are catching several hundred barbel a year or is it in reality the same twenty or so barbel caught many times over?

don't hate the player....hate the game ?I fish a private syndicate where there's 30 members they travel from all over the uk,waited 4 yrs to get on it,I'm a member of 4 different angling clubs, just so I can fish their river stretches,it's an 80 mile trip if I want a barbel....I go out of my way once a week to put some bait in out of season(cut and made another 12 swims for everyone to use this off season,on 1 club water alone....don't see no other lazy cnuts putting in the effort)....I  don't concern myself with what or if anyone else is catching....same goes for anything else in life....be it houses, cars or dogs?if others are blanking then that's down to their shite watercraft etc?

Ive offered and put plenty of lads on to their first barbel from this site......because I'm good like that?

No. It's down to some anti-social twunt piling in bait so he can catch tame fish.  You can't catch a fish that isn't feeding no matter what skill you have.

I shall be taking my canoe onto the tidal arun aiming for pike or perch on ultralight soft plastics or spinners. I have a well known Welshman from this site down for the weekend to shoot his first roebuck so he will be joining me too!

Jealous of what? ?

Within 30 mutes drive I've got over 100 miles of river fishing from trout to zander to 45lb carp and 150lb catfish, two 100 hectare lakes stocked with carp, roach, bream, perch, pike and zander, numerous smaller lakes. It is all free and normally I never see another angler or signs that the swim has been fished. The fish I catch have never seen a hook and once I've caught them I'll go elsewhere and fish for others. I don't have them queuing up waiting to be fed like cattle in a milking parlour.
