Has anyone heard this?? On radio 4 earlier. A number of top DEFRA civil (not so) servants have suggested that we no longer need a farming economy in the UK, and that we should stop farming and import all our food from external global markets!!??

Just think about that for a moment.

We...do...not...need...farming...in...the...UK!!

At a time where the worldwide demand for food is growing hugely, a time where UK food demands are growing, UK's Just In Time delivery proccesses are under constant strain brom variables such as adverse weather, fuel price rises, the potential for technology break down....etc etc; they want to stop farming, all farming in the UK, and buy EVERYTHING in!!

Not to mention what a mess the countryside will be in!! Oh no; I've just got it, the penny has dropped, this is so they can then turn our farm land, our countryside, our rural villages into the :censored: theme park that they want!!

How stupid are they, DEFRA, are supposed to be the ministry governing the bloody countryside and rural business......

Show me a farm or forest commodity that cannot be produced more effectively and imported more cheaply than UK produced? There is no such thing so in the eyes of the economist why go on subsidising such an inefficient industry? They did it too coal, too steel making, too shipbuilding, too clothing trade, too motor industry etc etc.

I can see a certain logic,,,, when sfp has run its course UK producers will have too stand on their own and try to compete globally which we all know they cannot.

Im sorry but the country is in a state! Make me Prime Minister!!!! All hunting bans lifted, no importation of food stuffs, immigrants and none british to go home! Anything else?? Oh yeh stop building houses on countryside (happened at both my last adresses). Could rant about this all day im afraid.

Im only 18 (19 next month) im dreading this country when ive got grand kids. I bet they wont be able to shoot anything, have a gun, go fishing, not even course fishing (catch and release) they wont be able to own a 'bull breed', staffys will probably be outlawed due to bad press and british people will be the MINORITY in BRITAIN!!!

Its insane.

bread is riseing allready imagine what they would charge if they had to import grain from abroad !! £5 loaf here we come :big_boss:

The problem with bread recently, and other grain related feeds such as cerials and indeed poultry and game birds who feed on grain, it thast the global rise in grain prices has pushed up the price of the end product.......because, well there is a world grain shortage......

......and they want to stop farming!!!

Notwithdtanding the economic food argument, what realy gets me :censored: furious is that they don't think farmers and the economy is needed, like farmers don't do anything else, as if the rural landscape will just continue regardless, for their benefit!! If people cant earn a living from a product, why continue to produce or even maintain and manage the resources?

Stupid just doesn't begin to cover it. When will they change? Why does this government and our political "leader" treat us all like this? Why do they get away with such shit when we all get hammered for the slightest thing???

My farm.

I fully understand what you are saying, and for the large part agree. Its a huge problem that thefarming economy has to be subsidised as it is however, if prices were fairer, trade free and easier, and there less commercial contrains of legislation that does not (should not) concern us (EEC) then the subsidy issue will be lesser.

Who says we should sell globally? Why export so much? Produce produce for a local market, the UK economy....

The smallest part of our farm is the most profitable, it has no subsidy and turns over £300k pa on a 10acre area. It does not suply foodstuffs, but it works.

The system is wrong!

I have to agree with you there, not only for the reasons reasons you state. But haven’t the government been yapping on about how importing goods are a massive factor in the creation of green house gasses? Yes. Have they been harping on about how we must start using our cars less to cut carbon emissions?

And yet Defra, a so called respectable government body, who should be encouraging the sale of local produce, makes a frankly stupid comment such as this.

The mind boggles

Quite right, I hadn't even thought of that I was so angry at the general direction of the comments.....

Just the thought of being told we don't need to manage the land.....but what you say is right....where on earth are they coming from?

They say one thing then contradict it with something else equally important....

To us it sounds a stupid idea. It doesn,t to the government, they aren,t stupid. If they do away with farms, and take their land, they can build on it, for the booming population of the uk, which it cant house now.It would do away with things like tb, f+m, scrapie etc. When the people of the uk, rely on imported food, the EU have us by the bollocks...no more vetoe,s etc, we toe the line , or starve.

The government want rid of the rural population, thats been obvious for years, mainly because we vote tory.

Thsat sounds a little too Orwellian, right out of Animal Farm, but I can see the logic.

This Government need to realise that that book was a work of fiction, not a bloody "How To....." guide.

That could happen, I'd like to think a LONG way off and not without a nasy fight in and out of court, but before then who will manage the land? Rich middle class suburban townsfolk, buying us acres for their self grafification, inflating prices even more.......

Vote Tory, or vote for me.......these guys aer just wrong, they get away with so so much!

You all know what this is about? Oil is running out, it's $100 a barrel at the moment, and the Arab's wont play ball.

BIOFUELS!!

Get the farmers to stop growing food, and hey presto! A taxable commodity we can export.
