BlueCoyote 0
http://www.njboxers.com/satin-balls-recipe.htm my bitch had a back injury last Feb. and even though she is walking now, she still needs a lot of therapy and i cant get her real end to muscle up at all. starting an all raw diet starting today and will continue to feed that for her. i know exercise is the priority but the diet thing is as important... so if you were trying to put weight on a dog thats been injured.. would you use that recipe? note that my goal is not to make her fat.. but to bring her back to what she was before she was injured.. which was a lean mean solid 80lbs.... i also know she will probably never be the same as she used to be, there will probably be a risk for it to happen again.. meaning my goals for her are shot to hell... but she's still a good guard dog and still does her job as a Live Stock Predator Killer and her nose still works.. she's always been a good tracker.. Never seen that before; we use minced meat, cheap supermarket grade with raw eggs (whole) and cooked pasta or rice as well as feeding raw chicken wings........worth a try Try some Google searches for BARF diet
BlueCoyote 0
yep done all that just looking for a fast way. probably not a good idea... i know.. but i'm tired of seeing two different halves on one dog. front have muscles, sinew, the epitome of extreme physical health... and the back end looking like a collapsed tent.. the whole chicken or duck dinners are coming soon, but right now i'm buying the stuff myself or using what is given to me. just today my mom tells me she found a sale for ground sirloin... she bought several packages and only paid $11 for them. i cant drive right now or i would have gone and got some myself... i told her that and she had a hissy fit.. feeding good meat to dogs Edited January 3, 2008 by BlueCoyote
Guest k9wpg
The only way you can build the muscle back up is by excercise and good food as just good food alone will only build fat up..Millet I agree with Millet but green tripe will put condition back on a dog .they have to use there neck muscles to rip it to eat also will put weight on the dog. Also swimming is the best form of exercise for a dog with back problems.Hydrotherapy pool or lake or sea ,the dogs body mass is suported by water yet it has to move the muscles to propel itself. Also i would be giving the dog a can of oily fish a day ..rich in omega 3 .But the main thing is sl,ow and carefull with any back injury ..do too much to soon youl just aggrivate the condition regards steve
BlueCoyote 0
dont know what a tripe is or where i can get it.. and yes swimming was how we got her back to walking again. she was hurt in late Feb. and it was still cold out but once it warmed up i had her at the beach and in the local river to swim around every chance i could. out of the water she would drag herself around.. but in the water she was almost normal! but since its cold again, and there is no canine hydrotherapy center here and i dont know anyone that owns a swimming pool.. i am waiting patiently to get a stock tank to let her swim around in.. i just have to go get it ... and thats not possible right now.. and its too cold anyway.. i figure just filling the tank with water and leading her around in hit will do her more good than just taking her for walks around the property. i missed the chance to get a treadmill someone was GIVING away.. but i'm worried about too much walking being bad for her.. too much impact you know? and i also agree with you Millet, you're right about good food only making her fat without exercise, but she isnt building ANY fat. her front end looks great. no fat at all. every muscle is defined.. but the rear is pathetic. i know its muscle atrophy from when she was paralyzed. despite messaging and moving them for her when she couldnt it wasnt enough. she REALLY needed to swim but it was too cold in the beginning.. i've seen paralyzed dogs that looked better than she does.. and she isnt even paralyzed anymore! she's been wormed recently.. so i dont get it.. all i can figure is the diet shes was on was worse than i thought - though the other bulldog seems to do fine on it... this was taken in November and this was taken a couple of weeks ago.. once you get past her shoulders all you see is loose skin and bone. she looks like shes recently had pups but its just skin where muscle used to be. i'm HOPING the new diet will strengthen those joints and tendons... and maybe even the muscles in her back?? she's still active for her condition which is why i'm wondering if something like the satin ball would be a good idea to help put some more meat on her... if she was going to get fat she would have done it already with the dog chow right?
