Whippets great, BUT ferreting whippets can feel the damp rain wind if stood for long periods. I’d go collie x greyhound/ whippet or collie lurcher x whippet. Wouldn’t  touch a first cross bed x w

Get a non ped or mongrel Whippet.Russells and Whippets get along without much bother.

Gents,

I've wandered in here from the ferreting section and need some help. I'm looking to get a runner to go with my jack russell for when I'm out. I've never had a lurcher before (although i worked with my friends for a few years). What do you reckon is the best cross in your opinion? It would only be used for ferreting. I've got 3 kids, but by all accounts they seem to be spot on family dogs.

Cheers,

Sam

Do your homework and source a lurcher to lurcher bred ferreting type lurcher that as the ability to step up a level if needed. The mutt will be in your family for a decade or more so don,t rush into an hasty mistake. You want a rabbit dog and that type will give you and your family more sport and enjoyment than many others.Source something thats a bit of an Heinz bred lurcherwith a few generations of hunting and sociability behind it,id steer well clear of bull and saluki infused lurchers and would,nt  want much more than a tad of whippet in the mix.Again do your homework and the chances are that the right type of lurcher will come from the right type of kennel and the price,if there is one, will reflect that fact.

dead right there. I would say 75 % of beddywhippets are bred for the pet market. I am hoping to breed the next pup myself.

Wash your mouth out with soap, its bad enough walking about with a bedlington and suffering fools and ridicule,i could,nt cope with being a Whippet owner as well.

I recon you wouldn’t be far wrong with 75% mark prediction. That’s all I’ll ever do now on mate I keep my own bred gear or dogs out my own breeding to other good dogs

Just personal preference. Nothing wrong with bedlingron x whippets, but I would prefer slightly longer in the leg.. However there’s no doubt a bedlington x whippet will give you plenty of sport and would  make a decent ferreting companion, but for me wouldn’t be my first choice.

In my experience a whippet is a much easier animal to live with an work especially for a first time owner than the beddy cross which is known for being stubborn an head strong, saying that we don’t know what your own temperament is like Sam ? an what experience you have with dogs, but I’d deffo recommend an whippet to anybody wanting there first rabbiting dog, unless the land they hunt is treacherous

Lad says he's got a jack russel...
