Internet providers and speeds

Recommended Posts

Years ago you didnt ever change stuff like insurances or suppliers ect but now your a mug if you don't shop around for deals. Our house insurance with nfu  was getting up around £750! !! we had a look round and got better cover for £430 !! Likewise car insurance, gas, electricity ect ect. We were with bt for ever and changed to vodafone it was about £63 a month for bt and came down £20 a month cheaper for voda and the speed went from 6....8  bps on a good day for bt right up to about 70...75 mbps down and about 54 mbps on voda. Our contract runs out in about a couple of weeks so we shopped around and found sky was cheaper. We got onto voda again and they will give us a discount which drops our monthly down to about £34. I think that we will probably stay with voda.  Bt want around £80 for something similar and use the monthly drop on Netflix for the Mrs. She likes watching a load of make believe  tripe with a load of proofs in it. Blatant poofery !!  I'll take the dog out so that it isnt subjected to it.

We're with EE for broadband. We were paying £35 a month for broadband and phone, then when the contract ran out it went up by £12 a month, but they gave us a £13 a month discount to stay with them. It's worth it for the free calls abroad when we have family in the U.S and Ireland.

We only get about 22-25mpbs but we're a long way from the cabinet.

Plusnet 135mpbs unlimited £26 a month

Wow.  That's a fantastic speed. And so cheap. In Scotland ??  Especially that it's achieved by a thin bit of wire stretched between two rusty baked bean tins over the hills. ??? I hear that it isn't as good when the wind blows or the snow gets on the wire though ! :D

We are with post office. I’ve been with them for years I was paying £33 a month until I moved house last January and they started me up on a new  customer 18month contract and it’s £18 a month line rental and unlimited broadband.

What sort of speed do you get?   What things  do you get in your package.   We have unlimited broadband,  anytime calls free to landlines and mobiles up to one hour, caller display,  caller waiting and nuisance call blocking. Speed is about 70 mbps download and 50 upload. There seems to be so many variables its like insurance sales nothing seems to be like for like.

Living on an Island we're pretty limited. We did change from BT to Sky a few years ago, complaining that we weren't getting the speeds we used to, we were informed by Sky because BT own all the exchanges and lines they throttle non BT customers at peak times so they can claim to be better than the rest! I have heard this from a few different sources, but how true it is I don't know? Wouldn't surprise me at all though.

I haven’t a clue about upload or download speeds. The package is just standard. We don’t use our landline very often as we have got mobile phones so I don’t worry about calls. I do know one thing myself the misses and 2 of my kids can all be using the internet at the same time and there’s never a problem with speed.  I’ve found the post office very good and they are cheaper than BT on calls as well.

BT don't own the exchanges, open reach do. Sky are LLUs are responsible for themselves.

Open reach do not throttle anything and a lot of LLUs will offer higher speeds than companies that use openreach
