Pistol ownership

Right I'm all ready now I had all my details back from Scotland Yard and am happy to continue with my application.

The sole reason for my wanting a gun is for earthwork at present we use a 410 which is alright but for obvious reasons more often than not the job could be finished a lot quicker by a pistol. I've heard of some using 410 pistols but think these may be few and far between but maybe I'm wrong I don't know? this would be an ideal answer as I presume it would just go on a shotty licence again I don't know for sure???

I really need some advice from others who own pistols or are at least in the know.

- Are pistols easy to obtain?

- What would be the best one to buy?

- What's the best reason to put on the application?

A 410 pistol (Derringer type) for dispatch should be quite easily available on a FAC (this is due to the brl length not cal in this case).

It is possible to accuire pistols as a .38 or 44 (and other cals) revolver of SA on your FAC for the purpose of humane dispatch of deer, although this is much much rarer, and most cases end up being refused by the police force concerned, untill the decision is contested with the assistance of (for example, BASC). In these cases, postols are usually restriced to two shots, by having magazines blocked/welded to only accept two rounds.

Believe it or not the ACPO would rather you use a claw hammer for humane despatch!!

As I recall, the Derringer style pistol is either a one or two shot (OU) pistol, and costs about £500 from Viking Arms (I think)

Have a chat with your local FAO and he will point you in the right direction.

You can also get one if you are a registered terrierman .Also get a .410 pistol for dispatching vermin in traps and for shooting vermin in and around release pens buildings etc.Mine was £50.If you go for .38 or similar they can be got for @£150 £200 .secondhand I did find some when I was looking. The .410 is louder than most but having used quite a few different ones I found the .410 the most efficient for what you want .
