Hob&Jill 258
I have just realised mesh size woul dbe affected by the material used State what size for what material if you can Quote Link to post
stephen58 1
the reason i use 2 1/4 is that ithink that it helps the ferret get through the net easier plus the rabbits head is through the net offering the oppertunity to quickly dispatch the rabbit and I use spun nylon nets Steve Quote Link to post
richie 1
i voted 2" as this is what ive always used & always got on well with them & my ferrets pass through them with no problem.. richie Quote Link to post
Guest Bigbob
Last lot of 50 nets i made i made 25 with 2" mesh i use at the start and end of the season to catch the small rabbits The other 25 had 2"1/4 inch mesh and i use them after sept till march .Hope this helps Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
I dont make nets. But when i do buy them, i go for 2'', as i find, the young bunnys, seem to slip threw the bigger mesh nets. Their seems to be half grown bunnys right threw the year these days. Also, some bunys over where i am, even when fully grown, are not as big as some well fed bunnys down the country, these also seem to slip threw the bigger mesh nets aswell. Quote Link to post
mantha 2
i picked 2" because ive allways used it and never had any problems with it and thats what my father used and teached me with. Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
H&J, Your mesh board needs to be different sizes for the different materials. Spun nylon will stretch when you make it (and when the rabbit hits it) so it needs to be 2" or you will lose them. For spun polyester or hemp then 2 1/4" would be my choice. When you make your board don't forget to allow for the thickness of your board in your size calculation too other wise with a 1/4" thick wooden board you could be 1/2" out on your actual mesh size. I prefer either a hardwood board or an aluminium one cut from a sheet of aluminium with the edges rounded off. I also have a few perspex ones I made years ago and they are good too. Make up a few different sizes for different mesh size/twine types, say maybe 2" or 2 1/4". I make my boards about 4 inches long but some folks make them longer, but that's personal preference. owdnorthener 13
I use 2 " mesh with hemp over a piece of hardboard. I think you normally stick with the one you were taught with if it gives no problems, this has always been fine for me. Good luck. Quote Link to post

Excellent advice there OTC I use a 2 1/8 board for knitting with hemp. I make my boards out of 1mm brass and I like them to fit in my hand. A couple of examples below: Good luck with the knitting Crow Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,540
some good advise there from OTC, I MADE THE MISSTAKE of using 2.1/4 on 10 z and only single notting it last year. i was an idiot , should no better after 20 year nitting the 10z i had stretches like hell , and doesnt tighten very well, so now i have a dozen nets that have nots loosening . i am afraid theres only 1 thing for these nets, save the rings an draw cord Quote Link to post

The reason being that the net is designed to trap the rabbit in a "purse". the net should allow the rabbit slide along the net till it is pursed. Larger mesh tends to get the rabbits head through easily and unless it's in the middle, it could take the net off the hole and kick free. I know fine that 2" isn't infallible, but it is the standard that has passed the test of time. Quote Link to post

the monkey slayer 1
i use 2.1/4 it helps the bigger hobs get in and out better and still catchs 98 % of wat i bolt Quote Link to post
Crow 1
2" is the standard size for purse nets. I never realised there was a 'standard' size So what size board would be needed for a net of 4" mesh (2" knot to knot) knitted in spun nylon as apposed to hemp? Crow Quote Link to post
