Once the EU realise that they will lose trade, fishing grounds, and have lorries full of perishable goods standing on the docks waiting for customs clearance they will soon push to continue what they have now. Emporer Macron wants to exclude the UK from some EU projects. Fine. And when EDF come round to negotiating their power generating contracts with the UK government they can be told to take a running jump. There are others who will take up the contracts and they don't have to be inside the EU. Same with fishing grounds. The French fishermen in Normandy need access to UK waters. They can be held to ransom too. The UK has been holding the best cards all along. The problem was that May hadn't a clue how to play as dirty as the EU have. Good post mate ..on the button that

Under EU laws all fishing grounds are allocated to members states on a quota basis. Spain has virtually no good fishing grounds of its own but has the biggest fishing fleet in the EU. French boats from Normandy and Brittany fish exclusively in British waters and would go out of business if deprived on those grounds. The Spanish market for fish dwarfs the UK market and their trawlers and factory ships need to access UK Atlantic grounds to fulfil their home markets for fish. Some of the UK fishing grounds can also be accessed by German, Dutch and Danish trawlers. The British and Irish waters are the best in Europe and quotas and licences are highly sought after and British skippers cannot compete with the French and Spanish as their markets are greater and more profitable. Spain and France also import thousands of tonnes of fish and shellfish each year from the UK and Ireland. If you go to Spain you will see loads of fish boxes outside restaurants and markets marked up with Scottish or Irish ports or companies. The way it works is that each day hundreds of refrigerated lorries set off from France and Spain loaded with fresh fruit and veg' headed for the UK. Once unloaded the same wagons pick up a load of fish or shellfish from British ports and take them back to France and Spain. Those lorries cannot afford to be held up in either direction or the cargo will be spoiled. There are stores in French newspapers about local skippers crapping themselves about going out of business if the British stop them fishing. Also in Spain similar stories about farmers losing a massive market if they cannot get their perishable cargoes through customs without delay. Another aspect is that at the moment the EU protects Spanish and French farmers by putting subsidies on fruit and veg' imported from North Africa, Turkey, Israel and beyond. That makes the EU produced products cheaper, but if the UK leave without a deal there is nothing stopping them buying their fruit and veg' direct from outside the EU which would be cheaper for the UK consumers and a catastrophe for French and Spanish farmers. And of course if the lorries aren't going north with the fruit and veg' they won't be able to return full of UK caught sea food so the restaurants will suffer too. If the UK acted as belligerently as the EU has done and close all UK fishing grounds to EU boats, even as a temporary measure to make a point, the local politicians in France, Spain and Ireland would be put under pressure by their businessmen to sort out the problem PDQ. 7

Nicepix 5,650
Interestingly in France the far right party are at the moment leading the European elections with Macron's party in second place 2% and 2 seats behind them and the next party are some way behind them.
