i nearly bought

Recommended Posts

While I'd wholeheartedly agree with what Phil said above, while I was a lot younger (and single) I stupidly said to myself, "Sod It: I'll get a pure one." Fortunately I was lucky in that, although I simply bought 'a kelpie' rather than looking too hard at the breeding, he was from extremely good lines and I've not looked back since. Unfortunately, I've since discovered that they're not all the same but I've been largely lucky with the ones I've had. They've all had their foibles but, then again, so did Old Rusty and I wouldn't swap one single day that I spent with him. I've never bred a litter in my life but I do wish I'd done so with him. He had that indefinable "something else" that always put him in the right place at the right time and meant that, no matter how much he pissed me off I still thought he was perfect.

My current two males are similarly bred, as both are line bred to the dogs which produced him, but (thanks to his RTA) Noggin is now largely a pet and is my son's dog and Ned...still looks like a floppy eared mongrel with only one 'nad.

Do you know anything about the breeding behind the male? Does he go back to Krypto again?

I havent had a chance to make contact with the farmer due to work comitments ,he told me the kelpie brought the sheep down from the hill lately and he is the best farm doghe has had so far...i will be asking him many questions when i get to meet up with him as i think he is very approachable..

Get the greyhound covered. What's the worst that could happen? If you don't you might end up regretting it and if you do and it doesn't work out, well just move on and try something else. It seems like doors are being opened for you and it would be a shame to slam them shut :victory:

It goes without saying that, as a Kelpie lurcher aficionado...I would wish you all the very best, with any future breeding project, but, a friendly word of advice...

The Working Kelpie in the UK is still an exceptional animal,..most specimens being used as they should be, on farms and smallholdings.

As of yet,  the breed has not been ruined by the pet and show fraternity.

Most Kelpies will work livestock, to some degree...they are not a rarity, there are a fair few about, so it behooves us all, to make doubly sure that any stock being considered in any breeding plan is 100% steady.

In all herding types, it is essential that they have good temperaments.

Many dogs appear to be bold and sensible whilst on home ground, yet if they are exposed to strange situations and new experiences, they can sometimes make you breathe a deep sigh of relief and say to yourself "Thank feck I never used that cranky critter"...?

Obviously, when hybridizing any breed with the Greyhound, (Mother Natures perfect canine), a lot of problems can be averted, but,.... it still pays to be cautious...?

All the best, Phil.?
