Seen collie /lurches/ mongrels / terriers dogs not let people in gardens and who would bite if someone did . Not being smart, this is probably all you need. She's the best watchdog I've got and alerts the bulldogs, also lets you know if snakes are about without getting bitten, costs nothing to keep.No one is going to sneak up on you.I always thought all you need is a chihuauhua and a shotgun and you'll sleep soundly anywhere. 4 Quote Link to post

Totally get what your saying, years ago after the rotty went ,and guard dogs were getting bad press, we got a Lhasa apso great little watch dog as that’s what they were used for years ago if you believed their history. They are like little alarm clocks for the big dogs.I think mine have come to rely on their warning bark.Their ears are like radars. They only bark to warn you of something, not constant yappers, like people say.I'll always have one.I've got a few different dogs but they all earn their keep. runner neil 215
Went to a site today and was greeted by a bloody huge black dog , which tried to bite me through the open window of my truck , the owner made nothing of it and said he is ok just excitable . When i got out it stood its ground and barked constantly . When i asked what it was the owner said it was a Labrador x Pyrenees mountain and was only 10 months . If a guard dog is meant to make people think twice this one done a good job and certainly let people know that someone was about....... b*****d even tried to piss on me 2 Quote Link to post

Is he a good example physically of bull mastiffs.? it bit hard from a pic really, but the dogs seems to have thrown more to the bulldog than the mastiff,on paper the breed is suppose to be 60%mastiff,and 40%bulldog. dont mean jack shit regards as guard dog. but if you look at the of 1930, they not as heavy or to much bulldog in them. few will know i had this breed and other bullbreeds,(staffs, pit) around the 60s and 80s, my male bullmastiff great type for this breed, he was big dog but very well put together. i got the best male bullmastiff at crufts 1985 , and won best bullmastiff at the LKA show, just before crufts. i came out of the breed, because of all the health probs =HD, elbow, probs, and not long lived.only got in lurchers at 1st as wanted a fit healthy type dog, then started to work them there after.i like the BOERBOEL but there far to big and heavy, to what they started out with there fooked bad hips etc no good being 12-14st dog , my vet told me years ago that, when dogs get over 100 lb, they become very unsound , the bullmastiff of old was as ive said 80-100lb dogs, this is where they got the name as guard dogs , your prob better of getting if you want the bull type guards a bandog , but still think well bred gsd from working lines dog about 80lb stop most people , and let you know who about as well . 2 Quote Link to post

Interesting that bird, your vet saying about the weight. My mother and her ex partner had an English mastiff that died from some sort of blood cancer at 7 years of age, about 15 years ago. Vet said that wasn't a bad age for them, as they're too big and suffer with quite a few complaints etc, compared to what they used to be like. The thing was enormous, I'm sure she said 30" tts and over 12 stone. I never measured or weighed it lol, but it was taller than most greyhound dogs, and looked practically treble the size. I know you said bullmastiff, not english mastiff, but I'm just confirming really what you say about these breeds Quote Link to post
