Regarding the "real gamekeepers night dog" post, that was 19th century England and the Bull Mastiff was developed to catch and kill people. It was ok back then as the people who owned the country estates made the laws and ran the world. They still do to some extent but a night dog killing a man eventually caused problems for them so stuff from Germany (farm dogs) replaced the English night dogs. At one time in English law if your dog killed a man all the owner had to do was pay the value of the dog to the family of the deceased man if he was adjudged to be the sole bread owner.

19th century?The romans utilised mastiff type dogs to enter battle and maim ,they recognised the worth of these dogs when they encountered them in battle much earlier.They brought them to Britain as did the Normans with their mastiff versions and their punitive rural laws.By the 19th century these mastiff types had evolved into several breed specific types,some to bait animals and some to hold men.

Yes, true, but when rearing game birds became a "thing" in England and people and means were needed to stop others "stealing" them, the type of dogs that had already existed in the past were not readily available or breeding true. Hence the Bull Mastiff was produced. The only type of dog that I never quite trust, however fat and useless that they are now. That's not true as I also don't trust American Bulldogs and any spitz breed bigger than a terrier.

Again the mastiff was bred centuries earlier,a breed specific type of mastiff was utilised as a keepers dog,would you not wish to own one of them now?,can you imagine owning a fecking destructive mutt like that now and learning it to puncture inflatable boats and migrants?.

No. Not really. I would dearly love to have a type of dog that I have owned or could borrow in the past to let off the lead and try better to explain to the people with large dogs why they should keep them on a lead until we can establish that their large dogs do not want to try and kill my terriers.

Where do you see that then?most of the lads I see with bandog type spend lots of time with their dogs and are very proud of how well trained and socialised they are.In fact id go as far as saying they put 80%of terrier and lurcher lads to shame Even some of the younguns Ive seen round the estates in London have fantastic obedience and control over their dogs

I’ve got this boy to guard the house and the lurchers. If you don’t live in my house he wants to eat you. Taken him to a few trainers/decoys to see if he was the real deal or all bark and no bite . He passed every test they flung at him with flying colours. My missis uses him to help her train our young horses also, we’ll I say train it’s more she takes him everywhere with them when doing environmental work etc and it seems to calm the horse down when he is watching over them.
