I remember meeting him over here when he came over to judge a bulldog show.A couple of lads who were peddlers of bulldogs over here that had never done a days digging in their life had been sending him patterdales and asked me to bring some of my terriers to show him.I took some photos of my dogs as there was no way I was taking any of my terriers to a show where there was gunna be a load of bulldogs being paraded around by a load of clowns. He asked me if I'd ship him some terriers in exchange for a couple of bulldogs and was quite put out when I just laughed at him after seeing the adult dogs he'd already sent over.Have you ever had any dealings with Darrin Jones from Sandvalley bulldogs? Mr Down south Birds of a feather flock together. I don't know Mr jones.I have never personally owned an American bulldog.I supposedly grew up in the heart of that country.Ive owned everything from rat terrier to lurchers lol.I don't know any serious hog hunter who uses them.I would rather swim to your side for a working staff for hogs than use an American bulldog.I don't have a use for guard dogs though this is strictly from hog hunting. All true catchdogs I seen hunting who earned the feed was apbt.Ive seen eighty lb American bulldogs run for the hills. This is dangerous when you're trying to grab a back leg.The best catchdog I ever seen who did it for years was a 30 lb chocolate bitch with no ears.second best was a three legged 40 lb male. Rickshaw swami 4,107
Alot of our baydogs we're cur jag or pit German wirehaired pointer cross. The catch dog isn't released until your 30 foot from hog.All pits will not catch on ear but this is what you want. Some of the best were cold dogs if y'all understand this term.Cold dogs from boxdogs seemed to take an ear hold mostly regardless of bloodline.Atrue catchdog in my opinion takes one bite on the ear as hard as he can. This isn't trained nor does it reproduce consistent. In Dixie most folks leg the hog live so things are done different.1 bay dog then 1 catch dog usually the baydog will catch naturally after the catchdog has the business end. Also most jags will naturally go for a boars nuts so while he's castrating him a apbt around 40lbs has the ear held. 2 Quote Link to post

Rickshaw swami 4,107
30-45 lbs was the weight on all the good ones.when you got a bulldog on a leash running through a canebrake swamp small catchdog is handy.Anything over 45-50lbs my dad always said was simply a large target lol Quote Link to post

Aussie Whip 4,086
My Am bulldog was a great guard, protection dog but at 45kg was too slow and heavy for any serious pig hunting. He was ok at picking up strays around pig traps and was a good holding dog. Most hunters here regard pure pits as too full on and get killed trying to fight the boars or drowned a lot too by pigs. There seems to be a trend of going back to lighter dogs such as English bull/staghound crosses. 1 Quote Link to post

I would never discount the American bulldogs guarding ability seen a few work the sleeve pretty impressive. As far as hog dogs the only decent American bulldogs were crosses to bird dogs. They were baydogs. An American bulldog is not a true catchdog in Dixie in my opinion. 15 hours ago, bird said: make sense that, alot of the pit dogs weren't over big , Richard strattion books , what ive got always says the best ones were 30 -50 lb , and the pit men didnt like to keep big dogs in the old days, a 45lb pit was a hand full he said never mind a 60lb one lol Mr bird I read strattons books till I memorized them as a kid.If you would like to investigate farther here's a list Sporting bull terrier Eugene glass it usually can be found for free on Google books. George armitage thirty years with This book will show the real side lol In George's book from 100 years ago you will see the name komisinski.I talked to Ozzie his protege on the phone for hours about this man.He is the most impressive.Research Walter komisinski on the web. Tl Williams books show more recent history and worth reading I'm pretty sure he was closed down so these books could be expensive now. Since I derailed the guarding topic here is a picture of my buddies Presa Canario pup. 2 Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
Had a lurcher given to me about 15 years ago. The kid that owned it was in the Jug and his mother was shit scared of it. It was a half starved mess when it arrived. It's sire was a Scott/Hines 'sports performance' bulldog (a title i've never understood?) And its dam was a greyhound. I'd seen the sire a year or two before and though i dont like em, it was a tidy animal with, i was told, a serious attitude as a guard... This lurcher, when i got it right, was probably the finest example of a bull blooded lurcher i've ever seen. 28", racy and the head of a purebred. I thought this thing would destroy all i put before it but sadly, after a lot of work, i realised it was a fecking shithouse. Wouldn't touch a 14lb fox single, and an arse grabber double. It was also a fecking liability with small dogs, hated em and wanted to kill even the most timid of Yorkies. It went where all doggies like that should go. I fecking wince when i read or see people thinking about AB's for producing lurchers. Quote Link to post
Rickshaw swami 4,107
Sorry Mr Bosun I made these posts about Alan to try to avoid a waste of time for y'all.Sorry I was late. Since I'm destroying dreams I was around a few Argentina dogos. The ones in America look awesome but are cowardly compared to a bulldog(apbt)I've seen blackmouth curs who were tougher than the dogos I seen .as always just my opinion but hope it saves someone a few dollars. 1 Quote Link to post
