Born Hunter 17,763
That's more a case of press equality than press freedom though. No? I mean, I agree that we don't have a truly free press, D-notices or libel laws wouldn't exist if we did. But we must stay vigilant. Unfortunately the MO of the press seems to have changed. They're entertainers now more than truth hunters and as a result people are becoming complacent with the importance of freedom of the press.

Beginning to wonder a bit, its a ratings game today, its all commercial, each wants to outdo the other, as the old saying, "don't let the truth get in the way of a good story!" Blackbriar 8,569
I think it's important to add that how news is absorbed has changed drastically in recent years. I don't know anyone who reads a newspaper on anything like a regular basis. I'll only get The Times on a Saturday, to fill a wet weekend ! The rise of online news, and fake news, allows anyone and everyone to seek out their own version of the truth, which further confirms their own beliefs and biases. The effect of that has been the increasing polarization of opinion, which is so evident that I'm not even going to list examples. I just wish that more people would inform themselves better, before they share their opinions !
Blackbriar 8,569
"There are three versions of this story. Yours, mine and the truth........." (And I don't quote Robbie Williams all that often ! :D)

Yep, but I think there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a shift, it seems, towards alternate press/news sources. We're all adapting to this new world of communication tech. This is where maintaining press freedom is so important because the establishment will and are trying to maintain their grip.

Traditional print is extremely expensive compared to digital media. Clickbait articles and ads are huge revenue generators. These news outlets are corporations for the most part. I think with such a radical shift in technology in the information age we still believe that the news should be truthful or at least written in a way that the writer intended it to be but we're behind the curve because it's all about clicks and views from the audience. Most people won't pay for news and will generally accept the news style format as fact without looking into it too deeply. Herein lies the problem...
liP 700
I read Google News, listen to the news on the radio, watch the news at Ten etc but have learned to take the headline stories with a pinch of salt so to speak, always try to read between the lines. Like with this story about the two Russian Novichoc (spelling) suspects, of which I have no doubt they did it, but how is it that an investigating company found out the true identities of the two fella's and the government's around the world had no knowledge? Or maybe they did and passed the info on to this company to expose them, who knows !! What news outlets should we be reading and listening to, to get unbiased news stories?

It's easier said than done as I have the tendency to be suspicious of breaking news headlines and I tend to cross check them across multiple outlets to see how the story changes. I don't necessarily have one stop for news but I'm a big believer in reading different versions of the same story. I'm quite partial to socks' obituary column. 1
