Thanks for the advice I will be trying things out. I will be having the dogs booster a week Tuesday and I will see what shit the vet feeds me as well. By then I I’ll have had time to tried some of these suggestions out.  Before anyone says I know boosters are a waste of money and not needed but I need the dogs up to date just in case I go on holiday. I would rather the dogs in a proper kennels than leave them for somebody to call round and feed.

Cheers Bill. I am going down th bicarb route for now, Started it today. If it works I will source some dog food with potassium All ready in it once I've finished the new bag of food I brought them friday. I noticed it once maybe twice in the first 12 months of his life. Hes Had a couple of bouts  since. The work load is only going to increase for him now so hopefully I can get it sorted.

1/4 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in his meal ???

Baking soda, will reduce heart burn ?and when it hits the stomach acid will produce a little wind ?, it's what gives the rise when baking . Alas at that point is neutralized by the stomach so has no further effect beyond a mild laxative.

Increasing fitness is the answer ?.

Hello  sandymere nice to see you explain something without links and quotes, yes fitness is certainly one of the main factors, dogs not being fit even more so being unprepared for work will/can be the cause of quite a few problems which could be avoided with some proper preparation.

Then of cause we have the problem of the secondary effect the gastrointestinal alkaloidosis and laxative effect of the sodium bicarbonate has on potassium levels...

 ?

Of cause low potassium is rare and would be a serious finding but with enough bicarb possible.

I get cramp terrible after a day loading out

I find the best way to combat it is to wake up in the middle of the night wi your calf or hamstring completely locked up

1 hop about doing a strange new dance

2 hurl obscene language at all and sundry including words you never even knew about

Waking the household is an added bonus

Hope this helps

A leading bone man told me to give the dog bicarb in a mutts water after it suffered with painful cramping,it worked, both the mutts that suffered where as fit as a mutt could be,i ran them to hard on a warm october afternoon and if ive ran them to hard since i always put a teaspoon of bicarb in their water, then half a teaspoon for the next couple of days, never had the problem since.
