was chatting to a mate yesterday and informed him i PTS my kelpie x last week and i was thinking of looking for a replacement in time ,,he was telling me of a neighbouring farmer friend that has a working collie ,,herds sheep off the hill alone and works cattle as well..he then told me the same man lamps with the collie too and it has in the past caught and KILLED  fox single handed ..he has attended lots of digs where the terriers were excavated and they let the collie draw the fox  and it finished the job...he has caught rabbits in the pitch dark,,when out with the owner and hunts cover after birds or fur ...surely you couldnt find a better stud for a 1st x..and i have a greyhound bitch due to break in the next month or so and it got me thinking ...what do you guys reckon ,,any minuses that you may envisage

So its a farm worked collie that the owner also lamps and attends to the terriers, works cover  on fur and feather and only sleeps at weekends.Single handed on fox and retrieves the odd belligerent steer to hand.I like Collies and admire them more than a few others,i find what they have to offer to a lurcher is a damn site more than any other mutt will ever possibly come to terms with, yet when i see a future litter and an owner on the make i cringe.

the collie sounds like it could be good dog, working cattle and sheep, it might have tougher temp that normal sheep dog . and if the the pup from the breeding , just used for rabbits day/night , there nothing to touch them for that job . ive had few colliexs over the years  they been  3/8  c  5/8 g and my 1x  c/g Bryn  , and all been spot on for the rabbit  job. but if you want to do foxes etc , forget it    get another type lurcher, somthing with pit in it . being honest  i think theres plenty of lurcher x lurcher out there that do well on rabbits, and will take other quarry  as well, carnt see the point of pushing your self in to  corner , and thats what you may do with 1x collie x grey ?  as said if its just rabbits go ahead  , if not  i use different type  lurcher  .

honestly bird ,i dont have any interest in foxes really ,if they do it ,then its an added bonus ,i like all edible quarry ,theres a lot of bull /collie greyhounds here doing lots of foxes ,i just want a well trained ferreting dog that will hunt and find for sport ..ive a few other mutts too so im not pigeon holed really ..we will see how it goes anyway ,im in no panic to be breeding a litter if theres a hiccup in any of the parents ...saying that ive known a few real good fox dogs from 1st x collies ...but their not the norm ..i know
