mark williams 7,558
A breathless night, wind wise, tonight lads, so i grabbed the chance to work on the shooting with my spring rifles again. I own just two pcp`s all others are either classic or modern spring rifles. I worked with just my HW 97K and my TX 200 HC MK3 both are .177 cal HW 97K with the Hawke Endurance L4 German reticle is just incredibly accurate. Carried the training over to the T Rex 200 HC MK3, again the accuracy available is incredible. For the newer lads, put loads of practice and training in before you attempt any hunting. Here`s an open sitty tree shot. Here`s an open sitty tree shot again but part of the head was behind a branch so i took a base of the head/ top of the neck shot. Perfect practice, makes perfect. New or seasoned lads/ gals, you can never practice enough, put the effort in guys. atb Mark. 6 Quote Link to post

Jimmy i`ve chucked in the 5p groups and i`m training myself solely on drawing pin heads these last 12 months. Here`s the T Rex last thing tonight at 38 yds on pin heads, first three were struck one after the other, two just missed and the sixth was struck, 4/6 hits on pin heads at 38 yds. I love working with the spring rifles, a true shooting challenge. atb Mark. Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
The only advantages I see a pcp has . they are quiet , at night a mag full of shots in the dark ready to go . the add night vision is not to good on a spring gun . spring gun tough and reliable 1 Quote Link to post
villaman 9,983
most can only shoot springers out to about 40 yards with no sticks , ok a few can shoot a bit longer but with a pcp I can shoot at 60 yards with a sub 12 and 120 yards FAC air with sticks or bipod and a lot quieter than a spring gun It all depends on your permission , if you have very large open fields then PCP every time imo and my choice of gun at the moment is FX impact fac .25 and my ultra .177 sub 12 at night. I keep my springers for plinking in the garden at 40 yards off the knee only 1 Quote Link to post
bigmac 97kt 13,796
If a job needs done then its pcp for me every time and as for spring rifles i can do just as good with them it all depends on the job in hand and how fast i can push the second pellet into the breech and nothing beats a pcp multi shot for that . atvbjimmy Quote Link to post
bigmac 97kt 13,796
The only bad thing with nv on a spring rifle is the weight most spring rifle,s are on the heavy side and to fit a nv to them adds a lot more weight to much imop atvbjimmy Quote Link to post

I keep my springers for plinking in the garden at 40 yards off the knee only well not in my case i had a old bsa .25 springer that i could shoot at 50m +.on our outdoor range i could hit targets from 10m all the way to the back stop at 55m ish.the rifle had a single stage heavy trigger but after 6 months of constant practice i could pick any target and hit it more regular than all users with pcp,s.all shooting was standing unsupported. 1 Quote Link to post
mark williams 7,558
I agree with a lot said . In a long waited, static hunt, i find the pcp priceless, when needing the least of any noise or movement. Walking or decoying either type of rifle as they are equally accurate but the spring rifles never run out of air. As for range, i rarely shoot beyond 40 yards as i normally don`t need to, as i can get that close and a lot closer, if needed. Not blowing a trumpet but if you do your bit a second shot is rarely required and again with silenced rifles, "moderators are helpful if you miss, sometimes". I`ll always own and use the 100`s i have but i get equal accuracy and far, far more of a shooting challenge with my spring rifles. PCP`s, for me, "make you think you are a far better shot than you are " atb Mark. Quote Link to post
j j m 6,540
There's a lot of pleasure to be had with spring guns Quote Link to post
ArchieHood 3,692
I prefer the silent approach rather than a good old .........TWANGGGG. 1 Quote Link to post

Unless of course, some maker brings out a truly beautiful classical, bolt action hunting rifle with the cylinder fully hidden in the forend. Yes they are accurate, recoilless and ultimately forgiving of a lot of bad habits in handling. But, you miss a lot of what makes shooting a pleasure with these things. Composing the shot, building a gentle, finesse in the hold and pressing the shot off. Nothing more satisfying than a clean, humane headshot at distance with a top notch spring rifle. That HW97k and Endurance scope you have is a deadly, blisteringly accurate rig. As is the TX200HC. If .177 caliber spring rifle hunting is all you require, these are all the rifles you'll ever need. 1 Quote Link to post
Underdog 2,337
I won't bother with blow up dollies again. My 99 don't twang, just a rewarding thump. The sak moderator off my WMR shuts it right up. It sits nice and I only ever shoot it offhand to 50 yards plus. Why even my little Chinky under lever is a blast now it's fettled. Dollies are over priced and too dependent on machinery all their working life, oh, and they are sterile, just like a Japanese 4cylinder bike!! U. Quote Link to post
Rimfireboy! 1,463
I like ‘em all, but if I could only keep one, it would be my rapid. No question. Quote Link to post
vizlauk 1,568
Well I’ve been down this route aswell, having pcp then springers then both ! Sold the lot , then decided to buy a prosport, dealt that in for a old s410 carbine in walnut that needed work , then fell for a .177 FX Streamline, so you just don’t know what is next , but whatever it is, the main thing is enjoy Quote Link to post
