rifles and silencers

I never thourt that a silencer reduces the power of a rifle so much. I heard that it had an effect on the power,recoil and accuracy of the gun.

I only discovered this last weak when i was shooting some stuff with my CZ 17HMR and i tort i would tack the silencer off and shoot the same stuff some more as you do.

When i notes t strait away that there was more penetration

Thats ok for cows,mags and rabbits but what if i what'd to shoot something bigger eg;A FOX, but still what'd to stay quiet.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

I agree mate. I noticed that if i zeroed the my HMR at 100 yrds with a silencer on, the took it of the bullets where striking about 2 inches high. Which suggests a loss of velocity and power with the silencer on. Cheers

On the HMR the "Power" loss is nowhere near as much as you seem to think, but try and get it on a chrono to check exactly if you are concerned, it will depend on the barrel, the ammo and the moderator. As long as you have a decent mod and it is correctly fitted, it will help the relatively small amount of muzzle flip you get from the HMR and therefore it should be a tiny bit more accurate. It will have plenty of power to stop a fox at 100 yards (if you put it in the right place) even though many will argue it is not a tool for fox anyway. (See best calibre for fox pinned above)

 

The HMR is relatively fast and very light which is a big part of this problem, the .22LR is less effected but a moderator on the end of anything will effect ballistic performance!

It is a heave barrel with a SAK mod,and the ammo is federal premium 17 grain hornady v-max polymer tip,2550 fps

Put it through a chrono, unless its improperly fitted, you wont see any more than 10fps loss...if that. The moderator alters the barrel harmonics, altering the point of impact.Imagine this in slow motion. You fire the gun, as the bullet travels up the barrel, the marrel is actually oscillating[ vibrating] usually in a circular motion.At one point in the circle, the bullet exits the muzzle. When you put a mod on , you put a weight on the end, so the bullet will exit the muzzle at a different point in the circle, thus moving the point of impact. A barrel vibrates like a tuning fork.

Dean this is why the rifle is more accurate when the barrel is free floating, and not touching the stock...

 

 

this is also what happens to a lesser extent when you fire your weapon........only this is .50 cal
