darrren 414
ok,i know where i can get hold of some ferrets now,but im planning on jsut one.basically, whats best,a hob or a jill?and how do you traing them to go down the hole??thanks Quote Link to post
Marty O Hare 3
I would get a pair of ferrets if you could, aparently they prefer company. Either a pair of jills or a hob and a jill (one wil need the snip/spaying if you don't want to breed them). Keeping 2 hobs together may cause problems when they get older. Make sure you have a decent place to keep them first. They have a natural instinct to go down rabbit holes so no real training needed. Should get yourself a book on ferrets/ ferreting if you can. I have no real preferance over a hob or jill, both work. Quote Link to post
darrren 414
ok thanks but its still ok if im set on having just the one?? Quote Link to post
stubby 175
ok thanks but its still ok if im set on having just the one?? so straight away you have no respect for your intended pet/worker by disregaurding it having the company of its own kind Quote Link to post
Guest bullterrier
well said stubby . ..john Quote Link to post
Hob&Jill 258
2 ferrets are no harder to keep than 1 mate, infact they are easier. Get 2, they are very socialble and love playing etc. No training is needed, it comes naturally. Quote Link to post
lurcherchavvy 3
i think its ok if you have 1 ferret you might need to give it more attention when i got my first ferret i had a jill and it was fine and i worked it every weekend but i had my dad to show me how to do it so i dont know if you know anyone you can go out with to show you how to do it but when you get it handle it as much as you can and if its a kit youll probly get a couple of bites at first Quote Link to post
lost scouse 46
WELL I HAD 1 FERRET BY ITSELF FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS TILL I LEARNT MORE ABOUT THEM BEST FERRET IVE EVER HAD SO I DIS AGREE WITH STUBBY BUT HEY ITS ONLY MY OPINION Quote Link to post
mooster 1
To be honest mate,if you need to come on here and ask how you get a ferret to go down a hole you really need to be asking if this is the right pet for you. How do you walk a dog?how do you feed a cat?,how do you ride a horse?how do you catch a fish? how do you shoot a pigeon? Best thing to do is to read a lot of books from the library,do some searches on this site and get some experience of ferreting with a friend or someone who has kept them before. Otherwise you are wasting your time with an animal which will demand your attention and care for the next ten years 356 days a year! Good luck if you are serious. Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
The only time i would agree with a lone ferret is if the said ferret WONT MIX , i have 2 here who will not tollerate other ferrets of either sex, i have tried to mix the 2 jills with different ones , neither one is having any of it But if you can get a pair who will mix then thats perfectly fine and is ideal as there company for each other & they will interact & play Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Do LOTS of reading, research and ask questions before getting a ferret, the most undervalued animal out there.............. Quote Link to post
mole catcher 1
no matter what folk on here say your doing the right thing by asking questions, no matter how daft they seem to those with more experiance. we all start somwhere and that includes making mistakes, no ones perfect. get a read of a few books, watch a few dvds then teach yourself whats needed and bin the stuff that doesnt work for you, its the way most folk learn in this day and age of not having someone to show them. you have a few months till the breeding season so you have time to educate yourself Quote Link to post
lost scouse 46
well said MOLE CATCHER Quote Link to post
knocker 0
good on ya for asking the questions darren get a couple of books or dvds and DO YOUR HOMEWORK on ferrets and ferreting, it's not just a case of getting a couple of ferrets and sticking them in a hole ( i prefer two ferrets rather than 1 ) they need lots of handling and attention EVERY day, please don't just go and get a ferret or two, make sure you are well prepared and owning stinkers will be a pleasure......oh and keep asking the questions on here or people you know who own ferrets but above all, NOBODY knows it all !
