scothunter 12,609
He's a nutter but a good TV host. Makes a change from all the other over scripted pish. That Chernobyl is a total headache. Decades later and still an international health risk.
ChrisJones 7,975
I wouldn't mind have a watch of that if I can find it. What station was it on? 2 hours ago, scothunter said: That Chernobyl is a total headache. Decades later and still an international health risk. I pulled this old article from 2013. The growing concern is the forest canopy that's been absorbing radioactive elements and the hypothesis is that as the summers are getting longer, hotter, and drier a wildfire in the exclusion zone could send all this sh*t back into the air. The lack of water in the predominantly pine woodland is a major concern as the trees are dying quicker as they're being eaten by insects and overcrowded due to zero forest management in the exclusion zone. Anyone that's seen this effect in the US will have noticed that the wildfires are increasing in frequency, size and destructive capacity. Add nuclear fallout into the mix and we can only hope you've got a Geiger counter next to the HP sauce! Luckily for everyone, though, climate change is a myth so it'll probably be fine.

Deker 3,478
To be honest he is a lot braver than me, sod all those Geiger counters/detectors/alarms, there is no way you would get me as close as he went! Edited July 31, 2018 by Deker

ChrisJones 7,975
Looking at the amount of filming and access around Pripyat and visitors centre at the power station. Also the fact you can take tours I reckon the immediate danger is hammed up for the cameras. Jeremy Wade was fishing the cooling ponds for f*cks sake! I'm not suggesting there is no risk at all but I do believe these reality shows are far from real in a sense. The exposure would have been very controlled and monitored. It's fear of the unknown and unseen combined with some horrific images of radiation sickness from overexposure. 1

I've had a very amateur fascination with the Chernobyl disaster as I watched it play out on John Craven's Newsround. That's still more reliable than Facebook. Like most internet research specialists I read up as much as I could on the disaster and despite finding gems like this I came to three conclusions. I, like everyone else that isn't a nuclear physicist, know f*ck all about it. As a direct result of 1, misinformation is rife and Trumpesque in its impact. The fear of disaster caused more harm than the actual disaster itself (the same thing is playing out in Japan with Fukushima) Still makes for great reading.

Radiation is still arriving from Japan too, (apparently it took the long route) and Welsh sheep glow in the dark....don't shoot prone from the grass!
