Carlovian 592
I bet like most hunts , it just meant the terriers they had at the kennels , rather than a distinct breed Edited July 23, 2018 by Carlovian 3 Quote Link to post

G, The original Irish terriers came in different colours, Red, Black and Tan etc.. see a photograph from 1910 below. Small rough terriers, probably not unlike the terriers all over these Islands at that time. IMO it is probably more correct to say that the dogs from both regions, Ireland and the North of England were crossed with each other. The case of which came first is probably lost to history. The Scarteen Hunt appear to have favoured white terriers if the available photographs are to be believed. John R Ryan around 1935 (the young lad standing in front) The terrier looks like a strong russell type. These can be found in the field today all over Munster in the South of Ireland. Scarteen meet outside the old house around 1940? maybe even earlier. White terrier in front. There is probably more evidence out there if anyone has access to the Hunt itself. 9 1 Quote Link to post
EDDIE B 3,166
I would think the Scarteen terrier is simply a line of terriers bred by the hunt. They probably bred, and kept them amongst themselves. So instead of attaching the name of a breeder to the line, they attached the name of the hunt. Quote Link to post
