after a few shots with the 25-06 or 270 cals, ya need a break, a little course & heavy for me, also exit wound is a tad on the big side (depending on load) waiste !!

both are effective stoppers, what ya shooting?? deer or hog

6.5 can be down loaded to 60g & less or upto 139g with efficiency & more , a lot more for the African bush........its clean sweet & smoother than both the above, & 6.5 is more flexable for a variety of uses...

thats my 10 bobs worth... so its 6.5 for me

Have been shooting a .270 for years and don't have an issue with it except for noise, would just like to hear other people, who have used these calibres on game give their opinions. You are obviously happy with the swede. What type of range are you shooting at?

I feel quite comfortable shooting red's and boar with a .222 loaded properly, the best part is the non-existent recoil. It is much easier for a head shot with this mild little calibre, and yeah when out lamping you do get sick of the bigger calibres.

Nobody over here uses a 6.5.

Hi FJ, sorry i never read the post till now, but imho the 6.5 is a little dream compared to the 25-06 or the .270, As was said the 6.5 is a very versatile weapon, i personally have seen deer shot at over 300 yards with it, And a good clean kill, it's getting very popular here in ireland now, and anyone who has bought one was more than impressed with it most of the guys i know are changing from .270 to 6.5x55 it's also very accurate, the lads i know say the .270 was not as accurate as the 6.5 good luck.

the 6.5 is an awesome caliber, with a long pedigree on the range a 260 is pretty similar too.

thousands of swedish mausers where sold in aussie and new zealand so plenty of 6.5's get used down here.

270 vs 2506 :hmm:

i hate the 270 myself,it boots, it's loud, overated and can be a poor performer on game in my experience.

the 2506 is a pup and just a beefed up 243, awesome for fallow and reds as it allows you to take neck or head shoots like a 223 or 243. it also works well for long range varmits too.

for knockdown power the 6.5x55 has the most out of the three, it is powder efficent too, for example the 270 loads use far more powder than the 6.5x55,

so the .270 in my eyes is not a very efficent round to load for.

The 6.5x55 is also very low on recoil so its a pleasure to shoot.

Cheers fella's, sounds very tempting, I ordered a new Rem 700 .270 recently but I think I may look at a 6.5 in something. There are plenty of ex-military jobs around but they just gather dust here as no one wants them, everyone seems to be going to the over rated short magnums.

I don't really want an military job either as am in the market for a newy.

I must admit I have hit deer with my .270 and had less than perfect results, quite possibly the factory ammo I was using.

Thankyou very much for your experiences, will keep you posted on progress.

Cheers for the info Kiwi.

My last .270 was a Ruger, it was a top rifle but had the worlds worst trigger and they were not that easy to 'fix' at the time, I believe Ruger have rectified that though.

I have found a couple of Sako dealers near me so will give them a call tomorrow for prices and such.

As for the .270 on deer, I am not sure of the issue, the pic is of a spikey I shot for meat from about 80 yards through the shoulder, he took of at the shot and I ran over an escarpment and hit him again in the throat and he kept going! He ran about 70 yards all up. The brindle dog tracked and found him the next morning. The shoulder was destroyed, the projectile did the damage, but I just don't know about striking energy. :hmm:

Thanks for your help.

FJ, if your going to get the 6.5x55 i would highly recommend the new sako 85 s/s. this rifle is first class well built, accuracy, and stoping power.

As for your spiky i'd say posibly down to bullet selection, jesus i've taken large red stags at 120yards neck shot, heart and lung, and they drop on the spot with the .243, are you sure it's not target bullets, or varmint bullets your using, this could be the only way i could explain the deer not droping at 80 yards.

Hi Snap Shot, sounds good with the Sako mate, that's the exact one I'm looking at.

Its a fairly old pic that, bullets were Winchester 130 PSP's and they destroyed everything in their path, but that bloke just wasn't giving up.

Doesn't matter a sh#t now, I have been looking at 6.5 ballistics and on what you fellas have said I am sold.

Just goes to show doesn't it, I have definitely learnt something that I would have never believed.

Top stuff fellas.

Hello FJ i have no experiance of the 6.5 at all.I dont like the 270 for it recoil/noise but have seen it perform well & is pretty much standary round for forestry commision for woodland stalking to put them down on the spot.I have seen deer run with many cals so no hard fast rule as you know bullet placment is key.Iv seen the 22.250 damage a lot of meat like a 270.I liked the 243 but wanted a little more but not a 270 fan thus i got a 25/06 but it likes the powder but its recoil with mod etc is that of a 243 & found it performs well on our deer with very little run & grown popular in our area.

Snap Shot, I found a Sako stainless at a local dealer today in 6.5, $2200, my Mrs just looked at me! What sort of money are you paying over there. I think i'll go back to the Ruger 77, Been looking at Rem 700 but they don't do it in 6.5. Will definitely keep you posted on progress.

V-max thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated. Bullet placement would be a lot more precise with the milder calibres I think.

Staghound that's because no one uses the 6.5x55 I would say and after reading pages and pages of ballistics and from what blokes on here have told me I have no idea why it isn't used more.
