I was going to get a hybrid but decided to go for a mountain bike, what if you are in a location you don't know and have to go on some real rough terrain? The hybrids wheels would get buckled in no time.

Orange 5 mate.Handbuilt in the uk with fantastic after sales service. Most of the dealers that sell them offer 0%finance so you can spread the cost. One great thing with orange is they give a five year guarantee with their frames and i know lands that have had frames replaced. Also if the frame starts to look a bit tatty you can send it back and the will shot blast repowdercoat in the colour of your choice and replace all bearings for £200 quid.

Wouldn't go to halfords as a rule but this model over the years has a good reputation for a solid good value bike

https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/hybrid-bikes/carrera-subway-1-mens-hybrid-bike-18-20-22-frames

also if you are on facebook check out your local for sale groups some bargains to be had. I picked up a tourer and a mountain bike but good quality bikes for 50 quid for the pair. Been riding the tourer to  work for over a year. Best bike i ever had

True if you get a mtb ,you can always fit road tyres to it

last year I took my son out to a forest cycle track and roads my vintage specialised hard rock mtb and my wrists were killing me due to no front forks.
