hi all this is my first hunting trip on my first permission (and only) and the first time out with my rifle with my recently upgraded scopes , had a great time and could have been out all day but want for the wife and kids had an after lunch curfew.

 

i have a question though i was shooting rabbits at between 15-25 yards 0.22 bisley magnums and kept haveing the problem of the pellets passing through the heads (and the bloody things just dont seem to realise they are dead) i am hitting just between the eye and ear as always been told to but today i lost a rabbit back down the whole as he convulsed back down there . any idea's ? my rifle seems to like the heavier pellet! but i am now thinking maybe a pest control type?

yeh i was hinking those new ones that open to a foot wide on barrel exit ! lol gonna try bisley pest control but feel at 16 grain may be a little light! love 23 grain magnums may adjust the power of the gun down slightly

looks like a good start to the new land!

 

The Bisley magnum is very heavy in a 12ft lb gun (I assume it is) but you seem to have the pellet arc sorted.

 

You can always try other pellets but I don't think you are going to do much better, if you like heavy pellets.

 

Regrettable though it is, you are never going to stop every animal with every shot, even Olympic target shooter don't get 100% every time. Depending how the Rabbit/squirrel present you could always try heart shots, particularly with the squirrel!

in my experience, & with my mk1 rapid my rifle didnt shoot pest control well over long ranges & had a grouping of over an inch at 25 yds which is not acceptable.. after going out & buying at least 10 different types of pellets, mainly bisley & spending a long morning down the gun club shooting on an indoor range at 25 yrds bench resting, i found bisley LRG were the most accurate as it was pellet on pellet..

 

when i do get a chance to get the air rifle out, i have no problem banging them down at 40 yds..

 

one thing i will say though, every make of rifle will shoot a pellet or a bullet differently to another. its going to be a trial & error test..

Good start to your exploits, good luck.

Regarding pellets I have a, now old, Titan Manitou (pcp) tried Bisley magnuns as rec. by Falcon who say they set their guns with these 'heavy' pellets. They do drop off quite a bit with 12ft lb.

I have found that a pellet weighing around the 16 grain mark is ideal, try Air Arms field the Titan loves them.

At the end of the day it is as has been said, trial and error, find the right pellet for your gun and stick with it.

I seem to remember one company offering a trial pack of pellets poss about 20 of various types but cant remember who!

cheers for all the coments lad's looking forward to more post's the shooting is ripe on my permission could have had a lot more but try and only shoot for the pot!! and woody's seem to spook to easily!!!!
