I'm watching a show called my fighting season about American troops in Afghanistan and was wondering why they don't send a dedicated sniper out on each patrol? I understand the theory of suppressive fire but as well as everybody rattling hundreds of rounds in the general direction surely having one marksman would make sense to actually kill the bad guy!

So to answer the  op

a sniper or sharpshooter is relatively embedded into a larger scale patrol as a capability or on overwatch ,

butrven rhe best laid plans don’t survive the first contact. Invariably a sniper will or may seek the advantage of high ground etc but often it is tactically unavailable to site one in a gold standard ? position during a firefight.

You cant just stop the battle while he lugs himself 300m underfire and settles into a position. You need to be agile and in your wits on the field of play.

Ostensibly they can be pre sites as a picket to pass through in open ground etc or as an overwatch on vp but quite frankly to say that a rifle platoon needs a sniper to look after them is a little insulting

Sounds like you've slept with one lol

An infantry sniper is a superior soldier of immense skill and an expert shot ... they are also very handsome charismatic and have a very large penis and can make love for hours at a time ???

Air gunner ,top plinker ,camo jacket ,22 pellet .....job done .

LOL, alright that might be the wrong term. I was under the impression the mod bought a load of semi auto rifles in 308 to equip some troops with to give a patrol a longer range capability. Might be totally wrong, hence the question marks!

First Google result https://www.militaryfactory.com/smallarms/detail.asp?smallarms_id=597

Now again bh I apologise if I came across condescending, that was far from my intentions.

I knew what lines you were on with the post before you wrote it and knew where you’d be taking the term from .

The sharpshooter rifle was a force multiplier asset on herrick and each platoon or maybe even section hAd one , alongside the gpmg and lmg and underslung g ls

they Add range to a sections firepower granted but aren’t comparable to a true long.

I’m a little out of touch with the rifle coys sops at present but I haven’t seen one in a while with the coys , more so with the brf lads and the sniper spotters as a secondary long perhaps?

Anyway a good bit of tackle regardless

well brought up ??

I thought I could hear your eyebrow rise, lol. I thought you were being coy. My missunderstanding!

Yeah, that's basically what I had read about it. Was/is a complementary system to the 3 others mentioned in a patrol. I think I read somewhere too that the yanks have a similar weapon chambered in 30-06? M14 maybe? That struck me as a pokey tool for the job but perhaps too unconventional a cal for the UK.

An awkward round yes .

Think the 303 is enough in the long role but to double handle that ammo into another weapon systemakes it a bit cack handed for us and our established calibres

On one of the shows the guy said "he keeps popping round the corner of the building 200 yards away" and they all just kept blasting the building. I'd have thought any decent rifle and scope would manage at that range?
