i needed one before xmass was a bit skint so bought a Ortovox patroller  it does the job they are around the £100 mark

As long as you wash the bellman after every dig it will give years of use .The orthodox however is just as good if a little slower .

They all work on the same frequency mate, not sure about the range but it would be more than you'd want to be digging.

Yeah mate bang on... Used it next to the bellman box and exactly the same maybe not as robust as bellman box but its half the size
