walshie 2,804
I'm coming to the end of my factory PPU SP ammo for the hornet so I'm going to start reloading. I've decided to start with 35gr v-max, the old PPU cases and Lil'gun powder. Half of the stuff I've read on the subject says crimping is a must. The other half says it's not necessary. I was going to buy a Lee Collet die set. Is it worth getting a crimp die too? Quote Link to post
Underdog 2,337
Always wish I had bought some collet dies for hornet, that thin brass can't support the bullet being fed and can yaw a little. I use to crimp for spherical powders just offer a little more resistance on ignition. U. Quote Link to post
IanB 0
Are you not tempted with the 40gr vmax walshie, great accuracy with lil gun and ppu brass... crimping them also tightens up the groups.. Quote Link to post

I don't really know what weight to start with. All I know is my mate is using 35gr and it smashes Charlie so figured I'd start there. I might get a box of each. Quote Link to post
IanB 0
Walshie I was using 35gr max and winchester brass with either H110 12.3gr or lil gun 12.9gr, nice load and accurate, dropped plenty of foxes but did have a few run on 30yds and drop. The 40gr buck the wind better and hit harder, although I have to single load them using a shot sled as mine have a long COL, but very tight groups. Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
Don't say that! That ex-sniper bloke will be all over you. I don't fancy single loading. How long were yours that you needed a shot sled? Quote Link to post
IanB 0
Forgot to say tried pistol primer and small rifle primer, absolutely no difference in accuracy , but the small rifle primer gave slightly higher POI and better velocity . Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
Wow. That is long. I was going to use small rifle primers mainly because I have loads already. Quote Link to post
IanB 0
If your using a CZ 527, and want to use 40gr vmax try around 12.5gr to 12.7gr Lil Gun with COL 1.890 -1.900" with a light crimp.. Should be great. Its a compressed load also. Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
Great. Cheers. Always good to have a starting point. Yes it is a 527. Quote Link to post
Underdog 2,337
There use to be a plastic piece in the magazine for hornet 527's. We use to sand it down so the magazine could take a loner COL. U. 1 Quote Link to post
Elliott 436
Definitely go for the 40gr V-Max instead of the 35gr. Lovely little bullet with Lil Gun. Haven't tried crimping yet. Quote Link to post

" Amazing little round though. I've dropped rabbits out to 350 yards with the 40gr V-Max reloads. Great for fox out to 200 yards or so, too. The Hornet is probably my favourite calibre. 1 Quote Link to post
