We've not had our heating on for six years, problem I found was cleaning the glass in the morning, because you get a lot of heat radiated through your glass which is lost if your glass is clarty, easier to light in the morning while the chiminey is still warm. Don't know if any of you have had one it is a Vermont castings intrepid .Thing I like about it is it is top loading really well put together.
