Poor speed and fps with FAP

Recommended Posts

Out of curiosity I ordered a tin of faps to try in the r10 and they arrived this morning. I set the chrony up in the usual spot same as always and a 10 shot string gave an average of 810 fps which is 10.7ftlb. Perhaps I was expecting faster results but AA fields give me 782 fps at 11.5ftlb so I was wondering has anyone had a similar experience or am I just expecting them to be faster out of the barrel than they are?

Just to add, down range at 32 yards the faps, although they are 0.8ftlb lower at the muzzle they are only 0.4ftlb below downrange so does it really matter a great load?

Hi Matt,

             Good post mate.

The bit that matters above all else, especially at sub 12 ft/lbs,- " accuracy always trumps power" - period !

I would pick the most accurate Matt and forget such little difference in power at our ranges. :good:

                                                   Good luck !

Yes I was thinking that. It's a bit too windy at the moment to get a fair comparison but the wind is dying off later this afternoon so I will try them out.

Out of interest Mark, what figures do you get out of them in the 100 pal?

To be fair Matt, 810fps is a fair ol' rate of knots

....... If the pellet is accurate, those FAPs will crumple and split up fast on impact - they'll do the business

Just for giggles: 810fps = 552mph.

...... Nothing's going to dodge that mate

Going on a bit of a tangent here, (Bare with me it bares relevance) I shot with Rabid from THL today and got the chance to try some new pellets through my gun. Rabid has a rather extensive collection of different pellets and was kind enough to let me try a few different ones in my rifle so see how I got on. When I tried FAPs I noticed my groupings were all over the shop. I had been shooting with RWS Super domes. Wicked little pellets and I was getting nice groupings, I switched to H&N hollow points which are significantly lighter and my groupings got even better. Rabid suggested I try the Daystate Sovereign pellets. In .22 these pellets are 15.9 grain so I was expecting them to drop quite far. Nope... they were all on the mark and my groupings improved dramatically. I then managed to shoot a squirrel with them and even with a chest shot it was dead outright (head shot was obscured by some twigs but it was a clean chest shot). Now I'm sure these pellets are traveling slower but they are hitting just as hard if not harder and as Mark above said, accuracy over power. I thought my groupings with Bisley superfields were good but going over to the Sovereigns was night and day. My groupings weren't fantastic still (I blame the wind haha) but as I say. I'd rather know I can be accurate with a hard hitting pellet than worry about a few FPS on the Chrono.
